The US auto industry has been suggesting for sometime they will need bailout loans to keep going...

Now today Bloomberg is reporting that with lending institutions greatly tightening the credit rating needed to get loans- including auto loans- I wonder if this economic crisis will spell the end of the US auto industry.... :???:

And yet I've read where the foreign automakers have steadily increased sales in the US, even recently. IMO there are more or less only a handful of domestic models on the market right now that measure up. The US automakers are carrying alot of union baggage and legacy around, much like an anchor around ones neck in an ocean full of sharks. Even if their design and quality were equal to the foreign competitors, I'm afraid they've lost so much brand loyalty that it will be very hard to regain it.

Does this mean Cal that you don't care for Palin, as her husband is a union man?? I disagree about the quality of American cars, there are lots around with 2-300K on them and still going. Of course perception is everything.

Being a union man does not mean that you are pro union, in some cases you have to belong to a union just to be able to work at a given job.!!!!

My state has a Mercedes plant, a Honda plant, and a Hyundai plant.

All of these auto makers were given BILLIONS in incentives to locate or relocate here. Do you think they could do that with the USA manufacturers? Of course not. We're a "Right To Work" state.

The big 3 here can't compete with a foreign automaker who get's these perks.

No way.

They only assemble here in the U.S. The big money employees in R & D, corpo and design remain overseas and they still keep the bigger nickels overseas. Blue collar and congress don't see the whole picture.

Almost each piece of the Hyundais' are built right here in the state.

One satellite operation that builds dashboards and steering wheels is sitting on my old hayfield.

But the big bucks do go back home.

With a wife as a governor, he had to join the union as you propose. No other jobs available I guess. Maybe he could have been a state trooper.

Her husband being a member of a union is not one of the many things I admire about her, although we don't know the details of if he had to join. Does this mean that she has your support since her husband's a "union man"? If you can find any reliability reports with the majority of top models being domestic, let us know. With, if I remember right, something to the extent of over $1100 of union baggage and lifelong legacy commitments alloted per vehicle, domestic automakers have to cut corners and scrimp wherever they think they can get away with it.

Yeah, he could have unscrupulously obtained money for some ghetto apartments, or gone to work in some hospital making several times more than what he was worth.

She has my support for supporting her husband. My hat is off to him, I suppose he has worked where there was a union and where there wasn't one and he knows which is better. I seriously doubt that a governor's husband could be forced into joining a union, don't you??
With respect to the auto's, it takes time to overcome a perception of inferiority. But I commonly see domestic models with 200k on them. Thats some pretty decent mileage. Years ago they couldn't have done it.
