Automatic Gate

For some reason, I had to replace last 3' of top wire on a gate, on the end you open. Had a roll of barbless with me that I use for patching, way nicer when you got to add a foot or two to have enuf to splice. My 'auto gate opener' is quite a bit shorter than me---kinda put a halt to her 'automatically' getting tangled up, think I'll do that on any new gates.

To be serious about it, an automatic steel bar gate hinged or sliding would be nice. should be about 18' wide with a remote that could be kept in the tractor or pickup. solar power would be great. I question if such a gate would be cost effective though. It does get old having to get off the tractor to open a gate, drive through, then get off again to close it. I think I might still need my dogs to keep the cattle back untill it is closed.
One neighbor has a drive over auto gate where he drives into his feeding area. I guess it works good until it gets full of snow and ice.

Another thing that I think would be nice would be something to keep stock tanks in a remote area open during the winter. I have thought of something in the order of the Pond Master but connecting it to a AC compresser from an automobile to make bubbles to keep an area in the tank open.

I think that if you built a system that you could mount whatever gate you wanted on would be nice. I think it would be best to be able to control it with a remote. I can think of a lot of uses for an automatic gate, I like to work by myself. Something like pairing out or sorting pairs, even sorting in an alley. I would think such a gate would be pretty handy in a feed lot.
I have a gate opener as well but she usually tells me to get the damn gate myself, so I guess you might say she is faulty. She also likes to short and pair out and the like, so an automatic gate would solve disscussion over who is at fault for poor gate management.

For sorting cattle a Dairy near me uses automatic gates set up with garage door opener remotes. The remotes activate solnoids applying air presure to cylinders to swing the gates.

These work good as the cattle are used to going thru them a couple of times a day.

I can see where they could be adapted to working corrals easily.
