Avalanche of major monday news stories
August 17, 2:05 PM · Anthony G. Martin - Columbia Conservative Examiner

Today is shaping up to be a very busy news day as a series of major Monday news stories have already hit the Internet. I will give you a brief rundown of the most important events, along with some appropriate commentary.

*The major buzz around Washington and the state of California this morning is that longtime U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, D-California, who is up for re-election next November, will be in a tough fight for her political life. In the clearest signal yet that the Obama-Democrat agenda is unpopular with a broad spectrum of the American public, Boxer will have great difficulty as she more than likely faces the highly popular and charismatic Republican Carly Florina.

This is exceptionally good news. As we have stated before, one of the absolute essentials of the 2010 midterm elections is to give the boot to Barbara Boxer.

*In major financial news that should dampen the contention that the economy is 'on the mend,' one of the largest banks in the nation, the Alabama-based Colonial Bank, was seized by the FDIC amid clear evidence that the bank was about to fail. This represents the largest bank failure so far this year.

Colonial has been an established Alabama institution for decades. It's failure is devastating and symbolizes not only that the U.S. economy is still in deep trouble but that there are ominous dark days ahead.

*In a stunning development for the Obama administration, the White House has admitted to engaging in email spam with regard to the Axelrod message on ObamaCare sent out to thousands who had never requested such information nor wished to receive it. Fox News White House correspondent Major Garrett pressed WH Press Secretary Gibbs last week about the issue, a heated exchange in which Garrett pressured Gibbs, to no avail, to state just how the White House got the names of the people to whom it sent the email.

The practice has fueled broad speculation as to whether or not the White House is collecting information on citizens, including developing an 'enemies list.'

*Former House Republican Majority Leader Dick Armey has charged that the Obama Administration plans to engage in hyper-scare tactics with regard to a swine-flu outbreak in September or October in order to 'scare the bedwetters into supporting their healthcare bill.'

Using a potentially deadly health crisis for political gain is simply unconscionable. But as Rahm 'Dead Fish' Emanuel (Obama's right-hand man) says, 'Never let a good crisis go to waste.'

*Regarding the Obama-Democrat plan for the government takeover of healthcare, the White House is reportedly dropping its plan for a so-called 'public option' in the proposal as a means of compromise.

The problem is that this one act is no real compromise. The government will still control healthcare even without a public option, due to the many provisions in House Bill H.R. 3200 that mandates certain criteria for care, compensation for doctors, and other regulations that will hamstring the ability of patients to make private healthcare decisions between them and their doctors, without government interference.

The only prudent course is for the entire bill to fail--NO COMPROMISE.

The only scenario in which I can see a compromise being productive is in the event Obama and the Democrats are willing to consider tort reform, allowing citizens to purchase healthcare plans across state lines, direct tax deductions for the costs of citizens purchasing their own plans, and tax breaks for employers who provide health insurance for their employees.

So far, Congress and Obama have totally ignored these proposals put forth by libertarians, certain members of the GOP, and conservatives. As long as this is the attitude exhibited by the Democratic leadership and the Obama team toward free-market solutions to healthcare problems, I can see absolutely no reason for ANY compromise at all.

The entire healthcare bill approved by the Waxman committee in the House should be defeated in its totality.

*In spite of the fact that the Canadian Healthcare System is touted by 'progressives' as a model for what we should implement in the U.S., Canada's top doctors say that their healthcare system is imploding and is in much worse shape than anyone realizes.

This could be excellent news for the U.S. If the Obamanoids get their way and ruin the U.S. healthcare system with a socialized medicine model, Americans perhaps will then be able to take refuge in Canada if their government-run system bites the dust. The demise of 'Canada-care' will mean a return to the private system. And this will mean that Americans will, after all, have an alternative when Obama and company tells us that we can't have a hip replacement because we are 'too old.'

H/t to Matt Drudge.
