Can't say I remember a lot about the week I spent in Paris when I was a lad of 16...About all I realy remember are a few nights out on the town and spending significant time with a girl who later became my girll friend who 8.5 years later became my wife.. Would probabl appreciate it more now that I am a bit older but the language would be harder on me.. .. My one recomendation is do not go in march. It rained a lot and we got hailed on a few times but there are some extraordinary things to see in that country/city... Wish we had gotten a chance to get over to Normandy.

Thanks for the info, I promise I won't go there in March, how sweet for you to spend time with a girl you ended up marrying...I'm assuming she's French? :p

Can't say I remember her from back than but she remembers me and doesn't hold it against me..Oh, she doesn't remember me from preschool but from when she was in 1st grade and I was in third...... I don't know what that says about me.. I am eithe unforgetable or I forget a lot of things others would remember....

Ahhh... The joys of the high school french class I was in... In 91, when I was still taking french it was an option to go on a school trip to France.. My folks have always felt that experieces like this were real improtant so that was something they pushed me into doing... WEll, it was cancelled due to Desert Storm... Next yar, she was a Freshman and went on the trip and I went to, even though I wasn't taking french anymore because Mom thought it was important. (Mom lived in Paris for a year becaue she was a French Major and later a French teacher iat a college).. So, long story short, it was a school trip.

Trust me on this: Paris doesn't really look like those pictures. No,no,no. Perhaps the buildings would if there were no people in the whole city. But try to picture those buildings with crowds of glum- faced people wall to wall,
they don't smile, lots of air pollution and dirt flying around, that's the Paris that is real. Crime infested subways with pickpockets in high gear, roads so crowded you wouldn't want to try driving and sky-high cost of living. Where other countries are printing signage in multiple languages to help tourists, any French government run system or building only has signs in French. Paris is not a friendly destination to my way of thinking. Sorry. :?
You know how photographers can airbrush actresses faces to remove imperfections?

"Sigh" :( I still think the website is awesome :) Periodically I go to that website just to readjust myself with the world around me.. It just plain makes me happy :) even tho it may not be true, I will never go there (to Paris physically)...after your kind words of wisdom, I won't think of all the decaying life happening on the streets below...

Sometimes when we have to live reality 24/7 with our land and cattle, with our water problems and well problems, weather problems and grasshoppers, it sure is nice to be able to escape for 5 min to watch this thing...

Sorry ranchwife, I thought I'da done you good by giving you credit for this.

If it makes you feel any better, I'd way rather go to your place than to Paris.

Lets see, uncrowded, no filthy people, not a lot of traffic, nice people instead of rude people, wildlife abounds versus no wildlife.....

Yup, that settles it, next vacation, we are coming to your house.

Oh... The folks weren't that rude and I didn't find it really any different than any large city as far as congestion and the type of person around.. The language thing could be a problem I suppose but a few basic words and phrases were really all you needed to get by.. What we found was as long as you gave a basic effort to try most of the people were pretty nice. If you ran up to people and said "Do you peak English" they tended to not react well to that.. Silly, I suppose, but how do we feel about people in this country only speaking Spanish? We talked to one guy about it.. I had a friend with me who didn't speak a lick of French and he kept asking me to ask questions for him even thouh my French was probably on the level of a 3 year olds... I finally just told him what to say.. Well, a guy over heard us and suggested that the first thing you should say is hello or excuse me as that would be the polite thing to do.. He than spoke to us in English for a few mintues and tried to explain some etique rules (In a very nice and kind manner by the way). It was very helpfull, would have been more so if I had retained any French, lol.

It is just different than home but that is okay.. The best piece of advice I have ever been given is there is beauty everywhere if you are just willing to see it...

Anthony

PS: JB, plenty of wild life in Paris.. The pigeon population is outstanding

We have been to Paris on several occasions. When we lived in Brussels, Belgium, it was a day trip.

We were acclimated to Europeans and never encountered rude people. Trying to speak French would usually cause the natives to speak english!!.

Paris is a wonderful city to visit with the family, but rather expensive. I am sending my kids and grandkids to Europe for a Christmas present this year. (Can't take it with you.)

Interesting note. When you drive in Paris at night, you can not use your headlights - you must drive with parking lights only. Violation of this rule will bring the local gendarmes down on you.

Wonderful city and experience.

Mr. FH is really narrow-minded.

He won't listen to the Dixie Chicks and he would never go to Paris.

Some differences:
I was there in 2004 which may have accounted for their anti-American attitude with the Iraqi situation.

We weren't staying in an elite section of town. The hotel was actually filthy. We'd have been better off in a youth hostel.

I was traveling with a Danish gal who speaks fluent French so the language was not the issue- she did all the talking. We used the subway system entirely so were in contact with the masses and someone tried to pick her pocketbook which cast a pall over part of the trip making us very aware of our surroundings at all times.

We both are used to Europeans, she of course is one herself and I lived there for 1/2 yr but have never experienced such a negative visit in other countries. I'm glad others had positive experiences.
