Even tho it was only three days, it was such a busy three days that it seemed more like a week LOL
The kids done well on their projects. The girls got a blue ribbon and placed 2nd in their class with their feeder, the boys got a blue ribbon on their trailer, but didnt place in the trailer class.
They won lots of good stuff that they can use in their Ag Mech Shop. Welders, gloves, all kinda welding supplies. Kinda funny that the girls built the feeder, that's mostly out of wood, and won welding stuff. But that's what they give everyone. Which is great. Small schools like ours with very little to no funding for the Ag dept from the school, can really use this kinda stuff. They also won a $250 gift card to the Bass Pro Shop. They'd already been talkin about takin a feild trip to Galveston to do some salt water fishing. That will really come in handy for that trip.
In total, they gave away over $750,000 in prize merchendise at the Houston Show. All donated by companies.
I'd just like to encourage all of you, if you need anything that pertains to Agriculture, go visit your local Ag Dept at the high school. These FFA kids build stuff that's much better than what you can go buy, and to your specifications, and most of the time all you pay for is the material. Takes them a little while to get it built, and usually they'll want to show it at the Stock shows, so if you are not in a real big hurry for whatever you need, go visit with them, they'll do a awesome job for you.
Both of our projects were built for local ranchers.
Here's a few pics of them at Houston.

This is our kids with their feeder and trailer.

Here's a picture of "Dora" the hog. They have a birthing exibit, where you can watch Sheep, Pigs, and Cattle give birth, if your there at the right time. We were there for the birth of the first two piglets, but it was late Monday evening. It was too cute, the Ag teachers lil girl, came runnin back to where our projects were, and she said, "Dora's already hatched one!!!!!" We left, and came back Tuesday morning, she'd gave birth to 12, but only 10 made it. Aren't they cute!!!!!! We've been talkin about gettin a couple pigs to raise for the freezer, and Lil Lilly informed me that no way could we get one that little, cuz they are too cute!!! I wouldnt want any that small to start with anyway. So we'll be lookin for em to be a few months old when we get them.

This was at the Chicken display. I just thought it was hilarious. They prolly thought I was nuts. Cuz I was laffin so hard. At the "SEDATION" part of this sign. Notice that when they go into the "Sedation booth" they have heads, they come out headless!!!!! It says that they go in, are sedated, and two veins are cut to "bleed" them. Then sent on to the "De-featherer" Uh huh, those two veins are cut alright.......OFF along with their heads!!!!! Guess they hafta make it sound pleasant so lil kids aren't "offended" by the process  LOL

I've always been impressed with your small group of amazing and talented kids...It's so great that Texas has these shows for the kids to display their works...I don't know of any shows like this in Nebraska, and it sure would be a great thing to have, it would give our FFA kids more exposure to the real world of ag...Besides, it seems like you all have a great time too! Congrads to all of your amazing kids!

Looks like a great show, and great projects. Those kids are learning valuable trade and life skills. Good looking bunch, too.

I don't know if the Ag/ FFA kids locally do anything like that. They are into study and judging of plants/pasture, animals, etc. at Kadoka where my grandkids go to school, and that's important too, but learning some of both would be great. Deep Sea fishing! I'm envious!!!!

There has been, probably still is, a display of products of Ag classes and FFA at the SD State Fair. I've not been there in years, but it was impressive when I last saw it.

Our small school didn't teach Ag, just wood shop, and it sure was impressive to see the furniture some of the kids built. They learned some drafting skills, too. Now, the school at Philip is teaching woodshop.

When Midland closed, kids mostly went to Kadoka & Philip, driving 26 to 35 miles more than they did getting to Midland. That's what happens when most families have only one or two kids and farms and ranches don't need as many people to provide the labor. Sure do appreciate the labor saving machinery, though!
