Barack Obama: Crook.
I think we've moved past "the appearance of impropriety."

It appears that Barack Obama, allegedly decent guy and agent of "change" in Washington, requested an earmark in 2006 for $1 million taxpayer dollars for the hospital where his wife works. Said hospital, by the way, gave Michelle Obama a huge raise (nearly $200,000, more than doubling her salary) in 2005 after Barack got elected to the United States Senate. Now, I know that there are lots of ways to talk about transactions like this involving public officials - quid pro quo, etc., but I prefer to call a crook a crook and just say that we're dealing with good, old fashioned, public corruption here.

I am having an especially hard time distinguishing Obama's actions here from those of, say, Duke Cunningham, who is currently in prison. I suppose you might say that Obama injected some more efficiency into the process by eliminating the middle man, but while I'm a big fan of efficient markets, generally speaking, I happen to think that there should not be any sort of market at all for the votes of public officials.

Perhaps these silly notions of ethical propriety are what Obama intends to "change" if he is elected President. If that's the case, I'll take the status quo, thanks. Without the quid.

Mike, I'm surprised (and disappointed) this story hasn't gotten more media coverage. All of the crap that the Obamaniacs here spew about "change" and this is just more of the same old sht. Guess it's easy to fool these libs by telling them what they want to hear.

Let's see if I can summarize:

Obama's wife got a raise of almost $200,000 right after he was elected to the U.S. Senate. Senator Obama then proposes an earmark to federal legislation to make her employer eligible for $1,000,000.

Change? :???:

The Politics Of Hope Posted 2008-03-15

Sen. Barack Obama talks about the audacity of hope and of his type of new politics that, allegedly, transcends the old. However, it appears the Illinois senator can play the old politics as skillfully as an expert gambler can play high-stakes poker.

In 2006, the Chicago Tribune reported that Michelle Obama's compensation at the University of Chicago Hospital, where she is a vice president for community affairs, jumped from $121,910 in 2004, just before her husband was elected to the Senate, to $316,962 in 2005, just after he took office.

So her raise was almost double her initial salary. That's a hefty increase. Perhaps that's one reason for the high cost of medical care in Chicago. So what did Mrs. Obama do to deserve this raise?

Perhaps it's what her husband did.

After his election, Sen. Obama composed an earmark request. Included was $1 million for a new hospital pavilion at the - you guessed it - University of Chicago.

However, Sen. Obama didn't stop there. Thanks to the tenacious digging of Sun-Times reporter Lynn Sweet, taxpayers can read all of Sen. Obama's earmark requests - they run 51 pages long.

One additional point should be noted about Mrs. Obama's job. As part of her responsibility, she took over management of the hospital's business diversity program.

Few people are expert in high-tech medical matters, so perhaps they'd be confused why a hospital has a business diversity program. Is that what a patient wants to know when he or she has to enter a hospital for life-saving medical procedures? That the hospital has a solid business diversity program?

Sen. Obama may speak about the "politics of hope," but it was the politics of cold cash that helped the University of Chicago hospital. And, perhaps, gave a big fiscal boost to Mrs. Obama too.
