Tempest over Obama's tea cup salute: Commander-in-chief sparks anger by saluting US Marines with drink in his hand

President was exiting his Marine One helicopter after landing in New York City for speeches about global warming and fighting ISIS in Syria
Commander-in-chief is a military title that entitles Obama to a salute, and he's expected to return the gesture
On Tuesday he saluted two uniformed US Marines while holding a cup in his hand, a breach that won't win him fans among veterans or servicemen
Twitter erupted with the president's indignant detractors
The White House put a short video of his arrival in New York on its own Instagram page, creating a public gaffe that no photographer had shown

President Barack Obama joked today during a New York speech that he doesn't seem to have the traffic problems the city's residents are always complaining about.

'It's actually pretty smooth for me during the week,' Obama said, after playfully arguing that everyone in New York 'hypes' the traffic.

'I don't know what the problem is,' he told attendees of the Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting. 'I haven't noticed.'

"There’s no regulation that stipulates presidents must salute the troops. In fact, for the first 192 years of our republic, it didn’t happen. None of the first 38 commanders in chief did it," wrote Brian Adam Jones.

Our ruling

Maddow wrote, "Not even old Gen. Eisenhower … saluted military personnel" as president.

For the record, no president is required to salute military personnel. And presidential salutes did not become commonplace until Reagan became president.

But Eisenhower, a five-star U.S. Army general, did salute "military personnel" as president, at least occasionally. We searched archived videos for about 90 minutes and found video evidence of seven salutes. Does that mean he did it all the time? No.

Reagan perhaps made the practice routine, but Eisenhower did salute military personnel. We rate Maddow's claim Mostly False.

Just like I don't believe police officers- or their Superiors not in uniform Chief/Mayor/Governor should salute-- because I oppose the militarization of law enforcement-and or the appearance that they are military-- so do I agree that the President/Commander in Chief should not do a hand salute...
And I believe that the reason for the first 192 years of this country no President offered an hand salute was to keep the Presidency a civilian entity - and not seen as a part of the military..

Fatsquatch never does get it. It's not whether a President should salute or should not salute, it's when he does choose to.............make it respectable like it's meant to be or don't do it at all.

That's what I was thinking, also.

Does Sister Sasquatch, queen of the school lunch, have a bag over her head, or is she in Muslim garb?

Exactly. What he did was equivalent to grabbing Little Joe and the Twins wih his left hand while saluting with his right.

This is the question I asked when I was in uniform- what is the protocol when not in uniform- and the answer apparently is still the same:

Salutes are not required when:
•Indoors, unless reporting to an officer or when on duty as a guard.
•A prisoner.
•Saluting is obviously inappropriate. In any case not covered by specific instructions, render the salute.
Either the senior or the subordinate is wearing civilian clothes.

Obama/The President (not in uniform) should not salute in any way...

I spelled it out for you and you STILL don't get it.

1- He's the Prez, or King, HNIC, or whatever you want to call him. He can do what he wants. AND DOES!!!!!!!!

2-But when he does choose to salute and be respectable, don't slop coffee all over himself.

You mean like this :???: Is slopping coffee worse than slopping dog slobber :???:  :p

As far as I'm concerned- too much sh*t happening in the country and worldwide to worry about a hand salute-- especially historically it is not something a non uniformed President does...

Which do you consider more militarizing of the country?
A) the commander in chief (by constitutional mandate) the head of US armed forces (that are barred from bringing arms against the citizenry) saluting marines.

B) the blm and IRS and homeland security and FEMA...(whose jurisdiction is within our borders and primarily US citizens) stockpiling hundreds of thousands of rounds.

Are you condemning all the military weaponry acquired by PD's and government agencies, schools etc?
And the massive acquisition of ammo by all these government agencies
