never gotten a response before.

Dear Ace:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about the nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this issue.

Any individual seeking the office of Secretary of Defense must demonstrate a clear perspective that aligns with the mainstream of U.S. foreign and defense policy. The incoming Secretary of Defense will also face extremely challenging fiscal conditions. The Secretary must work with Congress and the President to meet these budget challenges while protecting our citizens and our capabilities, along with ensuring the United States maintains the strongest military in the world.

Our nation has been at war for more than eleven years. It's time we brought our troops home from Afghanistan. The brave members of our military have served our nation courageously. They have done everything we have asked of them and more. We owe our troops and their families a debt of gratitude that can never fully be repaid. That is why we will not balance the budget on the backs of our service members and veterans on my watch. Rest assured that I will work with the incoming Secretary to ensure our troops and veterans receive the hard-earned benefits they deserve.

One of the best parts of my job is telling military leaders here in Washington about the great troops we have serving in Montana. Our Montana Airmen have earned national recognition for their outstanding service. I am so proud of their service. I have worked hard alongside Montanans over the last several years to ensure that Great Falls retained a flying mission. I secured Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta's support for the Montana National Guard before he was confirmed by the Senate. I am absolutely committed to ensuring that Malmstrom Air Force Base and our Montana National Guard maintain strong missions that will keep good-paying jobs in Montana.

Service is the most honorable thing a person can do. Whether it's service to the community, state, or country, service is the most noble of all human endeavors. While evaluating nominees to any post, I look for certain essential qualities. The nominee must be well-qualified and have a record of honesty, integrity, and a background free from ethical concerns. Please know that I am working hard to ensure all nominees are appointed only after serious consideration, and I always keep Montana's interests and principles in mind when I evaluate them.

Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch, and please let me know if I can be of further assistance. You can also visit my website at http://www.baucus.senate.gov for more information on current issues that affect Montanans.
Sincerely,

MB/jh

Much more perspective on his response could be gained by posting the original letter?

ya - that might help. i was just kinda surprised i actually got some sort of response.

i didn't send a letter. i phoned his office. i doubt a guy would ever get them on the phone anyway. when Hagel first came up in the news and all that noise i wasn't really paying attention cause it seems like there is nothing you can do about it, but i had ran into a lady i think a great deal of that does all the behind the scenes work for our local livestock assocoation - she gets very involved in more local grass roots issues. anyhow she started talking about Hagel and how everyone needed to voice their opinion in his opposition. so that evening i wanted to learn more about what the big deal was - couldn't really figure it out. then some montana group phoned here telling me i needed to call baucus and tell him to vote no on hagel's appointment. so i called and a secretary answered phone and i told her i wanted to know how he was planning to vote on hagel's appointment and if for it why and if against it why. she couldn't give answer and said baucus will get back. i've sent a few emails and phoned his and tester's office a few times but never a response. if email i usually just get directed to their websites to see their stance on any issues. its been a long time since i've ever gone to a deal where baucus or tester ever show up in person cause i just can't handle running into people like this

I see. So basically you got a "No Answer". Isn't that a typical politician?

i don't know what else a guy is supposed to think. i've always heard that if you don't like it you have to voice your opinion and do it by speaking with your reps or get involved. there isn't much of a way for a guy to talk to them... and even if you do get the chance to talk to them in person - they don't listen to a word you say or care unless you want to pump up their ego. i remember visiting with max baucus down at billings several years ago. a few ranchers were in a little circle talking to him and a guy i know real well asked baucus a question he didn't like and baucus just turned his back and walked away.

Maybe a wheelbarrow full of cash would get and keep his attention?

Anyway, it's good for us to keep pestering them.
