Atypical scrapie found in sheep in Britain

by Ann Bagel Storck on 11/16/2006 for Meatingplace.com

An atypical form of scrapie has been found in a 6-year-old cheviot ewe from New Zealand that is living on a U.K. research farm.

The animal's scrapie-free, New Zealand-raised parents have been kept in strict quarantine since they were sent to Britain for research, leaving no clear explanation of how the ewe contracted the disease.

According to an official from Biosecurity New Zealand, the country is free of classical scrapie, and no evidence of atypical scrapie has been found. Neither disease, which affects animals' brains, is considered a risk to humans.

The U.K. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is investigating how the ewe might have become infected.
