Best Advice

What is the best advice you were ever given by a friend or family member?

What brought this on is my 90 yo grandmother and some advice she gave me over the weekend that I have put to use. I'm trying to not laugh.
If you all remember my question to the Ranch Wives on dealing with our friends girlfriend and the food.
Well everytime I call our friends house the girlfriend answers the phone, it drives everyone crazy.
Grandma's advice is to hang up when she answers and keep calling and hanging up until she gets the hint that you don't want to talk to her.
My husband went over to our friends place last night and I called to remind him of something and she answered. No I didn't hang up right away, I asked for my husband, but he had already left; then I hung up without another word.
Love them older folks.

my dad (rest in peace, daddy!! ) gave me some pretty good advice in his day....advice and wisdom that I continue to use to get me through the mess my family is currently in...."when in a hole, quit digging!!".... "Live each day like it could be your very last...because you just never know!!"..... "God has a purpose for each and every one of us and we may never know that purpose, but it IS there!!"..."Don't beat a dead horse!"..... "Wake up each morning and find a purpose to smile that day and make the most of whatever is handed to you...you can either make a positive difference or you can be negative and that will cost you more than just friends in the long run!"

God, how I miss him!!! Now more than ever......

An old wise man once told me that most folks want what they don't have and pay little mind to the things they do have.

It sure seems to be true

A guy from Texas  and my dad both taught me not to pick on someone else's cattle just 'cause they aren't the same breed or color. I've also learned to keep my hat on my head, my hands in my pockets, and my trap shut when working cattle. Countless older gentlemen have taught me good lessons and I've been lucky to only learn a couple the hard way. If you'll look at my signature, Mr. Ralph Moody gave me that one out of one of his books. I try to live out those words every day.

My Grandmother was leaving Mo to catch a train to join Grandpa on the new homestead in Co. Her father's parting advice to this 16 year old bride was "Bert, (Birtie) you are going to a new and strange country. You'll need to rely on others, as you can't do it by yourself. Trust them that trust's the Lord, and don't trust nobody that don't trust nobody." When ever I talk with someone that brags they don't trust nobody, I reflect on G'mas advice. That was over a century ago, and it still hold water in my book.

That brings to mind one that my mom would offer at times - "Love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe".

Grandpa used to say "with horses, kids and dogs you'll get out of them exactly what ya put in to em'". And "most horses just need wet saddleblankets"!

From a darn good old cowman... "The most money you will make is what you don't spend."

From an old Norweigian who was born raised and died here in the sticks.... "He who has must lose."

"Life is all about Relationships, Relationships, Relationships."

I read from God's point of view that is what is of ultimate importance to Him for us. Our relationship with Him and with others must come first, before ALL else, or life gets skewed way off balance.

Once when I was in high school I was terribly stressed by something, don't even remember what it was now. But my grandpa told me "When I get stressed I just treat the problem like a dog would, if you can't eat it or hump it just piss on it and walk away."

Grampa used to say "Nobody is so stupid you can't learn somthin' from them."
There's a couple of forums on here where I try to keep that in mind

oh..... I almost forgot. Grampa also told me to never attempt to clean the hair and straw off the milk cows bag by setting a match to it. It just plain doesn't work and the ensuing carnage is horrific.
.....seems like sound advice, although it was hardly necesssary because I always took his advice about learnin' from stupid people.
