Best gun for farm use

I know absolutely positively nothing about guns.. I will need a gun for pred.control. I heard that coyotes are the biggest problem but you get the occasional bobcat in the sticks as well. Also I would like something with enough umph that I could put a horse or cow down if needed. Before anyone panics I will get a pro to show me how to use it properly and safely. I mean seriously would you give me a gun 8)

I think you need to get the gun and the man to use it in one package......

30/30 is pretty hard to beat for all around.

.223 is good but a little small to put down cows and horses.

Maybe a pistol for cows and horses and a .223 for varmints. Oh, thats right, you guys can't have pistols, can you?

I would got with a short action gun and stay away from a 30-06.. MAybe a 260 win or something to that affect... I would probably say you would be best served with a .223 but that is just me... You can take a cow down with a .22 worse case scenerio, that is what most of the lockers use anyways... I tend to use either a .45 or a 30-06 on a injured animal but that is just because I don't have a lot between a .22lr and a 30-06... One of the years Iwill buy a 22-250 or a 223.

The thought of Judith with a gun... Well, at least no one suggested a 50 BMG.

A .30-30?????? You gotta stay in close for that, I still say a .30-06, not too much recoil, and lots of bark.

For a small lady like Judith, a 30/30 wouldn't have as much kick to it as a 30-06. If you flinch, your going to miss. Not good when shooting at varmints. Much worse when putting down a cow or a horse.

It does no good to shoot somehting your not comfortable with.

Only guys after big animals at long distances need the power of a 30-06. Or yiung men who haven't learned to place their shots well or the art of sneaking in close, for a shot.
JMHO :)

Er.. meant 243 but I suppose a 260 would be okay. TO me a 30-06 kicks a bit more than I like personally and it would beat the crud out of my wife who is about average size for a women (Or so the statistics say)...

I have never shot a 30-30 but it would probably work fine.. I don't think Judith is looking for 500 yard shots across the prairie...

I've had better luck wityh my old Winchester lever action 30/30 than with any other gun. But I sure like my little .223. No kick and accurate up to any distance I want to shoot and the ammo is pretty inexpensive.

If you are a smaller woman Judith, check into a youth rifle. Shorter stock.

Come down and shoot mine and see what you think.

I might even let you pet my colts. :)

Get a little .22 Judith-you'll be shooting more skunks than anything lol. A little 17HMR will dust yotes out to 200 yards pretty handy. Ruger makes a sweet little lever gun in .17. Both of those are cheap and fun to shoot so you'll get good enough with them. P.S. Not many bobcats where you are headed.

I'm definately not a um er the petite type :) I'm a solid 150 and built like a sherman tank (OK a lady type sherman tank with boobs :)....) Not really worried about recoil and I'm not a flinchy type. But I'm a one shot girl, I don't want to have to put 40 rounds into anything to kill it. I know it sounds totally morbid to need a gun around to dispatch a horse or? but reality is that it could happen and I would rather have something that I can do the job with. I'm not the type to wait 4 hours for the vet while a critter suffers. Just thinking ahead as to what type of situations could arise. Can a 22 down a cow? I'll be on my own so I won't be able to ask a feller to help out :)

Jigs, Mrs Greg is correct the feller ya picked is lacking in the nose hair department. Remember strong like ox smart like stick. These are the three non-negotiables :)

Mrs. Greg I can't believe greg is making you be serious! Time for remote control therapy again me thinks :)

IL and Jinglebob Thanks a bunch I'll check into those ones :)

NR, can I swap ya a weasel and a poached doe to dispatch some yotes' for me  BAHAHAHAHAHA (yes folks inside private joke)

A .22lr to the head between, and slighty above the eyes of a cow will indeed kill it.... That is what the butcher uses around here. Now, they yried iton a mature buffalo and all they did was piss it off, had to use a slug gun in the end on that one, or so the story goes... I don't know about a 17 doing the job on a hurt animal but they are wonderous on yotes.

a .223 would give a bit more margin of error. I hate shooting down critters so I tend to go a little bit on the extreme power wise.
