Na-a-w-w. Just a generalization comment about some of the argumentative comments on most of the threads lately! It seems that when times get a little tough, people get a little "edgy" with their rationalization instead of calmly considering reality. Of course, every individual embraces their own sense of reality, depending on their own life's experiences. My wife has attempted to change my mind several times about several subjects - - NOT TOO successfully!

My specific reference regarding "off the wall" was to "Allen Colmes" of the "Fox News" program "Hannity and Colmes" - who causes me to react negatively, thereby prompting my wife to discourage my volatile reactions - - again - NOT TOO successfuly!

The research done by Matopos reasearch station in the arid aeas of Rhodesia in the 70's, showed 1100-1200 cows produced more Lbs/acre than heavier cattle of simlar genotype, both from the aspect of lower maintenance costs, and from having a higher conception rate and higher survival of calves to weaning.

Like Soapweed says, all things in moderation. Alot also depends on where you live. I can tell you that up where I live 1,100 - 1,200 lb cows are not as profitable as they may very well be in different climes. Year in and year out our cows tend to average about 1,450 lbs. Not the biggest cows in the country and not the smallest....... just moderate. I've seen cows of all sizes have good calves and poor calves, I wouldn't let cow size be my only determining factor in my selection process.
Keep your own replacements based on sound management decisions that fit your particular needs, and cull out those that don't produce and you will do fine.
Many years ago when we had more time and less cows, Dad weighed every calf in the fall and culled the mothers of the bottom 10%. Next year weaning weights were up 50 lbs.
I still remember his dad saying "you keep culling like that all you'll have left is your favourite cow".

My father-in-law says if you have two cows you should be able to find a reason to cull one!

An old cowboy I know use to say that " Women are the same way"
