Bin Laden's Former Driver Sentenced to 5 1/2 Years
Hamdan Receives Credit for Time Served, Could Be Released in 5 Months

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Aug. 7 -- A military jury has sentenced Osama bin Laden's former driver to 5 1/2 years in prison Thursday after he was convicted of providing material support to terrorists in the first U.S. war crimes trial since World War II.

The judge gave Salim Ahmed Hamdan credit for the slightly more than five years he has been held at Guantanamo, so he could be released in five months. But the U.S. government has argued it can detain Hamdan and other "enemy combatants" indefinitely as long as the war on terrorism continues.

No one could possibly be naive enough to believe that, so I'm assuming you're joking.

Its kind of hard for me to opine either way on the sentence- since unlike the Navy Captain that served as the Judge, I don't know all the evidence that was presented...

He was found guilty of supporting terrorism but not of conspiring in terrorist attacks by a jury made up of 6 military officers...

The truth probably lies somewhere between him being the "Osama right hand man aide" picture painted by the prosecution and the low level player driver painted by the defense...

First off it was not a remark it was a question, that is why it had a question mark at the end of it!

Secondly the question was posted because this very thing is what us Conservatives said would happen when they started trying our enemies in courts instead of holding them as combatants.

Thirdly there are many people that would like to see America fail, sadly many of them our here in our own country.

I never said I thought OT posted it because he felt the guy should get off. I wanted to know if that is what the Liberals were wanting when they pushed for these guys to stand trials. In other words it would be a lot better that these enemy combatants were held until this war against the terrorist was defused! Otherwise they will end up back killing Americans as this man very well may be in 5 months.

Naive people are people that think we can treat these terrorist as if they robbed the local convenient store. And this case is proof that the only outcome will be bad for Americans and good for the Terrorist. Wont be long Osama will have his loyal driver back!

Oldtimer the fact you didn't have all the evidence needed to form an opinion has never stopped you before in making off the wall statements, so why the flip flop on this one??

I am sure that there are 1000's of his supporters that do not believe your statement at all Mrs. Greg, however I do not believe that was not your real intended meaning.

King George is losing a lot of his power- his castle is crumbling about him- his rats are fleeing the ship...Some are playing the CYA game...Talk of International War Crimes trials I'm sure has the anal pucker factor a little tight on many right now...

As far as this deal- the miltitary and all the military attorneys have opposed GW from day one- saying some of their actions was illegal and ethically wrong...But they were overrode by the neocon crew of Cheney-Rumsfeld- Addington- Wolfowitz-etal...The military said that many of those being held at Gitmo were not terrorists and/or no longer a danger- the reason that most that were housed there have already been released after they finally got a review of their cases...

This split with the military could be the reason Major General Taguba came out with such a damning report against the administration...Even before the International Red Cross did...
Just think only a little over 5 months to go... :D

Is that why many that have been released were caught or killed on the battlefield!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're one sided, OT.

Actually the military, contrary to pentagon reports, testified to Congress (under oath) that only one person released from Gitmo can be confirmed as ever reappearing as a terrorist- a suicide bomber that blew himself up...And the military cannot explain-nor find the records on why he was released- because he had been designated as one of the dangerous ones....Which makes many to speculate that it was a CIA backdoor deal that went awry on them....
