biodiesel from rendering products in the UK

I heard from my Dad that the UK has responded to valueless rendering products by producing biodiesel from them. The BSE deal shifted rendering values from a positive to a negative discard fee. If biodiesel is a cost effective use for fat, that would be megacool for producers raising pig fat cattle.

Looks to me that it could be just the answer for the packers and their "worthless trim".

If tallow is receiving price pressure from biodiesel, then it should rearrange the value relationship between fat and third world lean. Anyway the result should be positive for North American producers.

For what it is worth, market prices for agricultural oils was quoted in the WSJ today.

Choice white grease-------17.5 cents/lb
Lard-------------------------30.0 cents/lb
Soybean Oil----------------24.24 cents/lb
Bleachable Tallow----------17.5 cents/lb
Corn Oil---------------------25.0 cents/lb

At about 7 1/2 lbs per gallon, this stuff would make some cheap biodiesel.

Year ago prices were about 3 cents less. Maybe someone is starting to buy the stuff for biodiesel.

If yoiu tried to burn lard in a tractor, it would probably head for the nearest mud hole on a hot day!! :D
