Blue Dog Says Pelosi Treats Members Like 'Mushrooms'
TownHall.com ^ | Tuesday, February 03, 2009 , 10:04 PM | Amanda Carpenter

Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper (Tenn.) vented to Air America about the way Speaker Nancy Pelosi was treating members who wanted to do things like read the bills being voted on.

It wasn't pretty.

Cooper, one of the 11 Democrats to vote against the House version of the stimulus bill, said he landed in hot water with Pelosi because he cared what was in the bill.

"I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don’t care what’s in the bill, they just want it pass and they want it to be unanimous," he said. "They don’t mind the partisan fighting cause that’s what they are used to. In fact, they’re really good at it. And they’re a little bit worried about what a post-partisan future might look like. If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We’re just told how to vote. We’re treated like mushrooms most of the time."

The Blue Dog Democrats could become the most powerful group in Congress. Part of how the Democrats gained power in the 2006 election was to run a lot of conservative Democrats in conservative districts. This could come back to bite Pelosi in the butt if these conservative Democrats stand on their principles...if not, look for them to be un-elected in 2010!!!!

I don't care what party you are in, if you get a bill and don't have time to read it before you sign on to it, you don't represent the people in your district, you represent your leadership in your party.

Signing bills before reading them is part of the fiasco with the stimulus package that is causing so much of a fuss right now. You would think they would learn something up there in D.C.

The biggest problem is that they are not being good stewards of taxpayer money.

I couldn't agree more.

I sometimes wonder if at times they even get an adequate synopsis from their staffers!

That would be hard with the number of people involved, wouldn't it?

I think as they try to control more and grow bigger, info. flow is restricted and quality of info is damaged.
