Information received on 18 August 2006 from Dr Peter W. de Leeuw, Chief Veterinary Officer, Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries, The Hague:

Report date: 18 August 2006.

Reason for immediate notification: first occurrence of a listed disease or infection in a country.

Date of first confirmation of the event: 17 August 2006.

Date of start of the event: 14 August 2006.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.

Location of outbreak: Kerkrade, Limburg province.

Number of animals in the outbreak

susceptible: 90.

cases: 2.

Description of affected population: one flock consisting of 35 ewes, one ram and 54 lambs.

Bluetongue was confirmed by laboratory investigations (PCR(1) and ELISA(2)).

Source of outbreak or origin of infection: unknown or inconclusive.

Control measures

A. Undertaken:

- control of arthropods

- movement control inside the country

- zoning


B. To be undertaken:

- screening

Other details/comments: 3 other farms with sheep are under investigation. Result are pending.

Translation of information received on 19 August 2006 from Dr Luc Engelé, Chief Veterinary Officer, Federal State Service for Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment, Sanitary Political Service Animals and Plants, Brussels:

Report date: 19 August 2006.

Reason for immediate notification: first occurrence of a listed disease or infection in a country.

Date of first confirmation of the event: 18 August 2006.

Date of start of the event: 18 August 2006.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.

Eleven outbreaks of bluetongue have been reported in 17 bovine (7 farms) and in 4 ovine (4 farms)

Bluetongue was confirmed on the basis of atypical clinical signs of the disease.

Location of outbreaks: Liege and Limburg provinces.

Diagnostic tests used: ELISA(1) and RT-PCR(2).

(1) ELISA: enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
(2) RT-PCR: reverse transcriptase - polymerase chain reaction

I can imagine it's hard to keep vector-born diseases across political/imaginary lines.

Hasn't British Columbia been having a problem also? When you have deer/elk and wildlife roaming it's gonna be dang near impossible.

Mike, our Elk herds will travel many many miles and even across Provincial boundarys to get the their wintering grounds and some animals even stay throughout the year. Politcal boundaries mean nothing to critters like them. Ron.
