Brand Question.

O.K. here in Southern Ontario one seldom hears anything about brands or branding cattle. But a while back the brand question came up and since then I've been thinking about what brand I would like to develop.

What I came up with was a brand that uses the first initial of both my wife's and my own name - both of us being "J"s. So I thought about some brands that I've seen on here and came up with the "Lazy J's Connected".

It would be two 'J's, the first one being half a letter higher than the second. They would be on a back slope with the top cross bar of the second one connected to the upright line of the first one.

Does that make sense? In case you haven't already figured it out, I would be pretty green in the West!!

The Mrs. does not like the name "Lazy J's Connected" but I said it suits me perfectly!!

If you plan on registering your brand the first thing you should probably do is find out what CAN be registered in your province. Here in BC we have OII (Owership Identification Inc.). They will tell you what letters can be connected, inverted, lazy, etc. as well as what symbols can be registered. Here in BC OII will not register a J in the lazy position.
Anyway, good luck and have fun deciding.

It sounds like it is a fairly "OPEN" brand which means it wouldn't blotch.

The folks up the road us a C lazy J I asked the wife why the J was lazy which was her. She laughed and said she asked her husband the same thing.

How about an upside down J and called yourself The Tipped over J. If ya got to enjoying the whisky you'd been just fine!

Or ya could go with J2 or 2J or J squared!

Whoa, lots of comments from the peanut gallery I see!!

I looked over the OCA website and, not surprisingly, found no info about branding. I'll need to make a few calls I guess.

If you can make it a one iron brand the better off you'll be. And try and find something that won't blotch like muddy says.I think that is a great idea for you.. Hopefully you'll show us how it looks this spring..

Here is a link to Alberta's brand agency, LIS. There are some ideas and interesting things about brands in there.

Give them a call and they will send you the paperwork. Two sheets I think. One introduction and another to draw out your brand with the location specified. Don't be surprised if they are shocked by your request.

Is there any brand inspection in Ontario?

If there is I sure can't find any evidence of it on the internet. I would think branding would be a good idea whether there was inspection or not.... piece of mind if nothing else.

no brand inspection in Ontario. Only B.C.,Alta,Sask. Manitoba has inspection for Sask. cattle sold over there. Make sure the brand is simple as possible, and don't forget that a capital j is actually jt combined.

No. If your cattle get rustled, from the yard or the mart, you better hope that no one clips the tags out of your cattle...because that is all the cops have to go on for the most part.
