We branded calves Friday and Saturday, our DIL was here and took some pictures on the second day. It was a nice sunny day for the first bunch, yesterday we sorted and vaccinated cows in the rain and put the calves under the roof to dry off. It was a balmy 2C (35F).

It is just wrong to have to wear insulated boots and snowsuits for a branding. Calves and people looked good.

Geez, after looking at your calves, which are a lot younger than mine, I better whip up some milk replacer and break the creep feed out to catch up with you! :D

Don't feel bad, we branded in snow boots and arctic Carhartts as well... of course that was over a month ago  !

One other thing, we always tilt the table... but after looking at your pics, I wonder why we do???

Glad to see you got 'er done gcreek. Spring appears to be dragging it's feet in your part of the country too I see.
We woke up to about 2 inches of white stuff on the ground after branding the neighbours calves yesterday.

Glad you got your branding job accomplished. We had three days of hard wind--Wednesday it was out of the north with hurricane force, and it knocked down our windmill closest to the house. Thursday, the wind whipped out of the south blowing everything back to where it came from the day before, and Friday, darned if it didn't blow back hard out of the north again. The tumbleweeds don't know whether they are coming or going, so some of them grab onto the fences and just hang on tight. :? Yesterday morning, the temperature fell down to 24 degrees, and tomorrow it is supposed to get up to 90 degrees. You just can never figure out Nebraska.

With the winds like they were this past week, I was glad we didn't have to attend any community brandings. They are just no fun on days like that.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, hopefully this bunch will be worth as much or more than the yearlings we just sold. If they don't get killed by bears or wolves or some other "natural" cause of death.

Per; there are a lot of things wrong about this country, overcrowding due to a nice climate is not one of them. Lester Dorsey, one of the original pioneers, used to say he liked his fellow man when he was "scattered some." I'll have to say, I like his logic. :D

WR; tilting the table, sometimes we do things because we can.

Hay Maker; there has been the odd year we have used the low input side of our brand, usually ended up with lower income.

Miocene; you need to get your eyes checked :p , I'll try to get a picture or two of your old darlings in the next day or so.

Kola; you're just jealous because it is too hot to wear sexy clothes like that where you are. :p

Soapweed; one of the old timers here would say the north wind is cold no matter what direction it comes from.

I have never seen a small chute like that - - - I bet it is handier than using the same ( large ) chute for everything

am I just blind or do the cows not have tags in their ears? :? Jay wears those same wool pants as you, swears by 'em!

The cows are all tagged, I attach them as close as I can get them to the head so they will stay in. We clip the hair out of the ear on newly purchased cows until we know who they are. After that the tags are really to let the neighbors know whose cattle they are as most of them are incapable of reading a brand.
I bought new Carharts for two years and went back to wool pants. They are cheaper and I can get three years out of them. I did like the knee pads that came with the Carharts, may get MIL to sew them into the woolies and see if they will last.

We are enjoying a wonderful snowstorm as I type. :(

Gcreek thanks for posting the pictures of how you do it. You got good tag placement on your RFID tags.

Your part of the country is so fascinating. Are you anywhere close to Anahim Lake?
