Branding at a little outfit.

We have all enjoyed seeing the pictures of the big ranches and their brandings so today ya get to sit back and see how the little guys do it! Just watch fast as it doesnt take long! :D The whole bunch of calves awaiting their fate!

Most of the crew except for Mrs. H.

It was kinda rainy this morning so I didnt catch the horse. What was I thinking? :???: We only had 4 to work but the biggest steer was born on the 24th of January and was a handful. A throw and a miss!

After roping the big bugger and allowing him to drag me around the corral to tire him out, we got him on his side and stretched out to brand and vaccinate. About now I wish I had friends to invite over for the branding!

Told ya it was quick! We'd took more pictures but when your dumb enough to hold a branding a foot with two kids and your sweet wife as help, we didnt snap many pictures. Reunited and heading for grass.

And after we got the cows and calves worked, here came another beautiful spring rain! :D Rain on the sage sure smells sweet!
DSCF0069-3.jpg

So we went in and watched the Derby on TV. And after the little sprinkle was over Little H and I went for a ride this afternoon.

Reba and Pumkin and Dad & daughter! Was a great way to spend an hour!

Ya can always tell a desert kid as he's the one fishing in mud puddles! :D Not much of a bite today. Probably oughta swap bait!
DSCF0074-3.jpg

We jumped a bar ditch and nobody fell off! That Little H is teaching me how to ride pretty good! So i'll be able to lose the seat belt and let go a' the horn!
DSCF0075-4.jpg

And Littlest H had to go for a lap! If the fishin' was better he'd still be out there! So that's how us little outfits work calves. They all go on pasture for the summer next weekend. I'd have a thousand head if it was in the cards, but until then i'll make due with this little bunch. Sure wish I either had friends or a calf table. Can't decide which would be cheaper! Next year I'll have sense enough to atleast use a horse. :D

A little bit of rain in dry country goes a long way, I also can smell that wet sage from a 27-8 year old memory. Clouding up to rain here in the swamps also.
If you'll take a tip from a guy that's been there, those big calves can be pinned behind a gate and worked standing up. It does take the fun and excercise out of the operation though.
Our road is starting to show a few bad frostboils and with the expected rain on the way we decided to send our yearlings to the sale a couple of days earlier than we had planned to be sure they got there. We loaded 1 load yesterday and two this morning, good drivers and a few prayers floated all three loads across the soft spots without a hitch.

Enjoy the good times with your young family and take care.

leanin' H, the way you tell a story, you ought to write a book. You sure have a great way with words. You have a beautiful family. I'm sure you know they are worth more than 10,000 head.

Hey H..........just wondering.........if you happen to put the brand on crooked........would we be calling ya Straight H.........or (shudder) Lazy H?? Just wondering cause sometimes unintended crap happens when one is the heeling, wrestling & brandin crew all at once!

That's why he's got it registered in twelve locations on the cow. :p :D

While your answering that H. How did if get to lean? Was is some of that unintended stuff that leaned it over in the first place? How long has it been in the outfit?

Glad to see you finished before the critters got rained on. I was thinking you should have roped that calf laying down instead of the one you were aiming for, (3rd photo) kinda like shooting a sitting duck.

We are the proud owners of a brand that I pulled from the depths of my imagination. My Dad's brand was a V4 with a bar under it. My wife's Dad has the 4B and we kinda wanted our own brand. (although we still have both of their brands registered too!) I wanted something that wouldnt blotch and was original. A neighbor has the lazy H as that was a perfect fit given my loathing of sweat and actual work! So we just leaned it! My good friend calls it the cockeyed H. The part I shouldnt tell ya about due to the heck I'll catch is when I got the electric brand built. I had to draw it in order to get it how i wanted it. I spent a couple hours getting it perfect on paper so it leaned at the right angle. When I finished all proud of myself and showed my wife she simply said, "couldnt ya have drawn a regular H and then just leaned it when ya branded something?" I hate it when she uses logic on me like that! :D I'll keep putting it on crooked even after i can afford to hire help! And While I may have it registered everywhere from the left jaw to the right scrotum, atleast I've never ran a herd of crossbred yaks or sheared a wooly ol' mountain maggot! :p We are the Leanin' H! Raising quality cattle and custom beef since 1995! Some of the beef we've sold was even ours!

I agree, Leanin H. You are a good story teller. It is a gift that not everyone has.

I enjoyed all the pictures of the little guy fishing in
a mud puddle wearing his cowboy hat--that photo along with the caption was priceless!!

I can see you really enjoy your kids. That is priceless as well.

Thanks for sharing.

Rusty and wore out. Shortgrass that's the way I feel this morning after half day of helping neighbors brand yesterday. In the afternoon the neighbor's kid and his cousin took off to go to a rodeo. That's youth for ya!

Me? I came home and took a nap!
