Nice branding pictures, Silver. My favorite was the one of the littlest Silver and all the moo-cows. You live in a very pretty part of the world. It looks like great ranch country, even if it is awful close to the Arctic Circle.

Jinglebob, I missed an opportunity to say this earlier, so I will say it now:

"It ain't what you look like going; it's what you can do after your get there."

Great pictures, Silver. I enjoyed everyone. Especially like to see the ladies
dragging calves horseback.

Jinglebob, when I post our branding pics, you won't see one single cowboy hat. lol. My hat got ran over in a stampede. lol. I wear a free baseball hat everywhere, cept town, then I really slick myself up in a hat that I win at cattle shows, my fav. lol.

Great pix. Thanks for posting them.

But...................ugh, ahem, hmmm,.......where are the hats?

Haha... I wondered who was gonna be the first to bring that up! I was wondering about it myself too that day... generally a good number of us do wear hats, but for some reason we didn't end up with 'em that day. I think you'll notice I'm wearing a straw in the pic taken at the neighbours branding though.

Great pics, Silver! Loved the baby and moo cows........and the overly branded calf, it makes me think of Al's Tillie, when she was a baby.

Hey, are ya my nephew? Ya sure look like him........

Ohh well the world is full of 'All hat and no cows- cowboys anyways.' Don't wear a ball cap much either but I never kicked out free help that showed up wearing one-unless it's on backwards-you gotta draw the line somewhere.

One thing that is different in our neck of the woods is we never brand on dirt-we always just make a big corral out of portable panels and brand on fresh grass-the crew can put the pen up pretty darn quick-and for some reason the branding pen has to be perfectly round lol. Glad I wasn't a wrassler at your event some pretty soggy calves there. Riding by an old branding site sure gives a good example of 'hoof action' on grass-you can see the big green circles of better grass for a long time after. Personally I like roping out of a pen like yours better-do you leave all the cows in or just a few to settle the calves.

NR, that pen was green grass when we turned 'em in, but it lasted about 5 minutes. We got half an inch of rain the night before, so held off branding until noon. It was nip and tuck whether we were gonna call it off or not. That was just a pen we set up in the field a couple of days before.
We run most of the cows out, keep a dozen or two in to keep things settled.
We branded about three hundred in 4 hrs, lotsa beer breaks during (irons don't keep up). I've considered doing something different to keep the irons hot, but have thought better of it because if I had my way branding would go on all day. :D

Thanks for sharing the pics Silver. I always wonder why everyone has to hurry up and get done with the most enjoyable day on the ranch. I can see hurrying to beat a storm coming in but to hurry through when you don't have to. To slow things down, we used to play "baseball" sometimes. You had to have two hocks, if you missed three loops you had to get off your horse and work the ground until everyone else has had a try, then you could get back on. Ropers become more patient and throw good loops cause no on wants to get off, so it slows the pace and makes things more fun.

Where we use nordforks, you have to catch two feet or they don't work, so that helps too. Heading and heeling seems to slow things down and is sure fun. You have to train the "team ropers" that we aren't in a hurry and that they don't partner up with one specific partner. It's best to have a little more room than most use in a dragging pen, but it's sure a good and fun way to do it.

Looks like Silver's branding went well.

I'll try and remember and post some of our little branding, later. Probably won't do it until last of June or first of July.
