Branding Pics

Well, I am a bit late with the pics. We branded last Monday. But here they are. We did 100 calves. Took 3 people to do it, in about 3 hours. Calves got vaccinated with an 8-way and a shot of ivomec and branded. Treated a few for scours. Then we vaccinated the cows and ivomeced them too.

Waiting their turn

Thanks for the pics!!! I sure do enjoy seeing how folks do things differently, especially the smaller producers.

How do you like that little calf chute and how does it stack up compared to a calf table?

I really like it a lot. It is basically a little squeeze chute for the calves. I prefer it to a tipping table, the only real reason to use a table is if you are castrating, and we band all our calves at birth. And, with this, you can band them if you want.

We used to rope and throw all the calves, but I find this to be easier on every one, calves included.

Looks and sounds like you had a productive day! Thanks for the pics.

I see quite a few here using electric branding irons....how do you like yours?

I like the electric iron. It puts the same brand on every animal every time.

In the chute, some of these guys fill that chute up pretty good....

For a moment there, I thought you were talking about the guys who were pushing the calves down the chute. Then I saw that soggy good-doing calf and realized it was just a simple mis-understanding. :)

Nice pictures of good-looking calves. Thanks.

Good, soggy set of calves Randi. We're still letting ours get big enough to pack the brand. Probably next week.

Yeah, some of ours weren't hardly big enough. But they had to go out to pasture, and it made more sense to brand them first. Rather than have to bring them back home in a week or so to do it (they are only 2 miles from home). Now they are out til it is time to send them north. Just bring 'em home and run them onto the semis.

You could sit in a lawn chair and brand almost lol. Our branding is the last one up here usually just befoe school starts-we still do it the old way with 60 footers-well 40 footer in my case. That stand up chute looks to be a good deal-I own a share in one of those yellow Calf Roper tables but I haven't used it in probably 15 years or more. Were headed down to Wood Mountain on Friday almost in your neighborhood.

I like the looks of that little chute. How far would I have to go to get one? Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Assiniboia? I think I need to try it out.

You either need to get shorter people to help or need to run the calves up a ramp into that chute. My back is hurt looking at him bend over to do that branding.
It looks like it would hold the head good if you needed to dehorn or implant.

What advantage do you get from ivomecing calves in the spring?

We used to do it that way, but, cooking isn't my forte. I told DH either a chute, or he could do the cooking. You see his decision.

We've friends that use those calf roper chutes. They are pretty good too. You don't need to tip a calf with them either. But just a little more pricey to buy than these are.

You'll only be about 1/2 hour from us at Wood Mountain. Heck, the Wood Mountain kids all go to school with ours now. What is going on there? Rodeo or a School?

We have a calf chute (loaned to the neighbors 15 years ago and never went and got it  ) that is on a raised platform. It works good, no
bending over but the calves need to have been banded or castrated because you can't tip it.

Ivermectin in the sping is a waste of money. Worms propagate by
temperature and moisture. They aren't worm infested from pastures til later.
Strategic worming is recommended (in our country) the last part
of June when they have been on pasture long enough to ingest worms. Since there is no worms in the calves this early, there is no need to worm them.

They are made in Manitoba. I don't really know where you would get one at. Best bet would be to call them.

It isn't too bad, only takes a few seconds to brand a calf. Then you have a couple minutes between to straighten up  while the calf is vaccinated and the next one is brought in and caught.

It holds their heads real good for dehorning and implanting. Especially if you make sure and catch their nose too. We never worry about that, rarely have one to dehorn (all done at birth) and we don't implant.

We've been ivomecing them for several years now. First time we did it, we only did the black calves, left the red ones as a control group. Noticed that the blacks looked a lot shinier and didn't have any flies on them. Basically it deworms them, keeps the flies off and the ticks off as well. All that adds up to extra pounds. And the generic stuff we use costs about $0.50 per calf. Pretty cheap dewormer. We use the injectable.
