Didn't think it would quite dry out for the branding today... so, much to the roper's disapointment, we got the table out .

Yesterday we gathered the pairs to be branded, and put them in the calving lot overnight. Since they've never gone this way before, we could trick them... this time anyway :D.

Waiting for their turn.

Myself and my friend worked the back. As it turned out, neither one of us got kicked once .

We ran four head at a time into the squeeze chute, and loaded the calf table from there. Left plenty of time to eat cinnamon rolls and visit .

Hooray, it's done! :D The table was a good way to go this year since we could still brand despite the muck. We had a good crew and did a lot of laughing and catching up... we kinda forgot we were working...which is the way it should be .

Yep, food takes priority when we have people help. Jim's wife is an excellent cook... she can make toast taste like a treat :D. Following the cinnamon rolls, beef brisket, potatoes with cheese/sour cream/and LOTS of butter, salad, and lemon bars were served. Iris' cooking is the main reason we can get help...it's not me .

When people come to help, we try to make it fun and enjoyable...been to too many places where something simple has turned into the day from h*ll. Like Jim always says, if it seems like work, we better stop and figure out what we're doing wrong .

The calves looked good today. I hope they stay healthy!!! I also hope everyone else has a good branding.

At least the calves were'nt covered in mud...nothin' worse than bein' ground crew, tryin' to grab a hold of a squirmin calf too slick to get a grip on...

Speakin' of ground-crew...anyone lookin for an extra hand ? I'm available.

Great job! I'd like to have a few, darn few, but just a few of your boulders....rocks, whatever. :)

When I read,
Myself and my friend worked the back. As it turned out, neither one of us got kicked once
I thought of a famous Bill Clinton quotation.

Great pictures. This year my folks are planning on using the calf streacher things for wrestling as the kids just aren't in the country any more and the young men are my folks age. I guess it just comes down to doing what a person has to to get the job done. I grew up in the age of rope and tail wrestling and am glad I did. However, it seems there is getting to be less of dragging them to the fire and wrestling them all the time. :?
