Ulster farmers hold protest for ban on Brazilian beef

Farmers will be handing out free samples of Northern Ireland barbecued beef at a protest outside Belfast Hall today.

Protest group Farmers for Action has called for a ban on the import of Brazilian beef, claiming recent revelations suggest illegal growth promoters are being used in its production.

The group has also called on the UK government to introduce laws requiring that all food outlets must state the country of origin of the beef they use.

Farmers for Action says Brazilian beef is not up to EU, UK or Irish standards.

The group will stage its protest outside the City Hall from 2pm onwards.

The protest follows calls by the Ulster Farmers Union for a ban on Brazilian beef imports, prompted by a damning report on the way it is produced.

Officials from two official bodies visited Brazil to investigate the beef industry and were alarmed at what they found.

They questioned the Brazilian traceability system, foot-and-mouth controls and the impact of the industry on the environment and poor rural communities.

Ulster Farmers' Union president Kenneth Sharkey said: "Having read this report, it is now clear that the situation is even worse than we had feared.

"It is clear that we can not have confidence in the Brazilian traceability system and foot-and-mouth controls in the country are totally inadequate. This new evidence completely endorses our view that Brazilian beef imports should be banned," he added.
