Bred cow prices

PC, I find the thing that alters the trade in Alberta isn't so much the out and out rancher that usually either sticks with it through thick and thin, maybe reduces stock in a drought or sells out completely once in a lifetime and doesn't come back. I think there is a "farm/feedlot/prospector factor" - the guys that have a pile of home grown feed/damaged grain crops etc and will buy and calve 6 or 700 cows if they think they are cheap enough. I know one such outfit who did that last year. Bought them, wintered them out in the east country then when it got dry there shipped them to Manitoba. Weaned the calves already and shipped the cows to the packer. They made good money and will look to do the same again this fall if the opportunity arises.

PC - we saw good young cows go on Monday for that 36 cent mark (about 32 US) skinnier cows were tough. XL was the big buyer (no surprise) so lots of cows are going to die.
GF - a lot of the speculation in AB is tax driven out of other industries as well. A lot of people in the industry for tax reasons are pleased to lose a bit. On the other hand a lot of that spare change may have dried up in the last little while. There are a few major feedlots with year ends coming up and they have not really jumped into the market in a big way on feeder calves yet. Forage is still pretty high priced in this area, although we will see if people get what they are asking.
Next year is an elusive target. We plan for disaster, hope for the best and try to remember to say thanks for all our blessings.

Totally depends on the cow...cows.... Good bagged, good feet and raising good calves... Is there records? Are they Purebred? Can we see the calves?? Are they bred back and preg cheked? If you can answer all them questions with a yes....

$900.00 to 1400.00 depends on the age..

Wow, it's a different world down there :( I've got some cows arriving today that I just bought. They are straight red Angus, not registered, from a droughted out guy that's selling up. He has a real nice set of cows must have been culled really hard for udders and feet, rearing good calves, mainly young cows (most 3rd calvers) quiet, bought conditional on being preg checked bred. I got to pick the best 60% out of them (or the ones that I wanted anyway) - $625. I was thinking that maybe I had paid too much

Now is the time to be buying..... Herefords crossed with angus, f1s are big money.... But each to there own 8) 8)

You did, even guaranteed pregnant with a vet cert are selling for 30-35 cents a pound . Young healthy cattle are not getting any more than that right now. I think the bred cow market will be obsolete this year, most are looking to next year and if the amount of moisture we have had since the middle of August is any indication we could all be in for a hell of a ride again in '10.
