Bred Heifer Prices

Was at a cow sale just before christmas.A guy sold roughly 50 gelbvieh cross heifer's,weight was in the 1000 pound range and to calve starting may and he averaged $500 a piece.It was pretty hard not to buy them,but since i start calving in january i didn't want to have to calve 50 heifers in may to.If they would have been bred to calve in febuary i know where they would be right now!!

We have four nice salebarns all within an hour's drive, and I like to patronize each of them. Sometimes it is good not to have all of one's eggs in one basket. :wink:

At Valentine yesterday, our Angus bred heifers averaged 942 pounds and brought $980. One buyer took all 98 head. We were planning to take 110 head to the sale, but ten looked to be bred early by my friend's short-aged bull calf that mistakenly ended up spending time with the heifers. :roll: We ended up taking 100 head. One turned up empty, and she weighed 955 and sold for $78.50 per cwt ($749.67). Another heifer walked a bit gimpy from hauling. They wondered if I wanted to take her back home, but since we didn't have a trailer along she sold for $800 as a bred heifer. At least maybe now the hay won't go quite so fast. :wink:

You did well on your open heifer Soapweed - the 10 extra lbs yours weighed earned you $277.17 more than I got for mine this week :shock: I guess the black culls must be in favor too.
 
I don't know NR.i'm starting to think more towards,i must really like cows to keep doing this.And then do it in january :roll: .Couple of more years payments on these cows and then there mine,and then it's going to be a change.Doubt the cows would leave,probably be a change in the calving date though.Well i better get back out in the snow storm,have a cow calving.The joys of january calving :D .
 
I don't miss it for a bit-you'll get fat and sassy as me if yopu change lol. I'd say it's the biggest management change in our country since exotics came in. Good heifers brought close to $1,000 here last Friday while the better cows were up to $750. The day I had 13 calves in -48 kind of made my mind up for me.
