Bred my first cow today!

Hi all!
Boy, I got to breed my very first cow today! I went to A.I. school back in April, so I finally got to put my skills to the test. Yesterday, we got all our replacement heifers and registered cattle together to A.I. We stuck Estrotect patches on all 20 and last night we had one cow's patch turn pink. We watched her, and sure enough, she was in heat. This morning Dad came into my room and told me to go A.I. her. I was a little nervous, but I was able to find my way through the cervix and deposited my load. Hopefully, we'll have a OCC Homer calf on the ground early April of next year! :D

Thanks to you both! Homer has thrown a couple pretty good calves for us and I am pleased with them. An interesting fact: this was actually my sister's cow. She stood chute-side and watched whilst I bred the cow. No pressure. :)

Good for you myt, if ya have the skills you should use them. Did you get the grazing chicken program up and running?

Per, I sure wisht I could say yes, but in actuality, no. I have been just locking them up at night and letting them free range during the day. I would like to control where and when the graze, but both Dad and I have so many irons in the fire that we haven't gotten time to build the portable pens. Hopefully, we will have some built for late August grazing or at least some for next spring. On a lighter note, those roosters are getting plump between bugs, grass, and corn. Makes my mouth water thinking about it. :)

Good for you Cade! Hope ya get a nice calf come fall! :D

Must be short gestation periods in Utah   :D

Well, fall 2010 I think (hope) is what 'H was meaning. Hey BMR! I bred yet another today! Yesterday's cow was a three year old and had a pretty large cervix for an easy breed. Today, I got a heifer. But not nearly as bad as I thought! They are a heck of a lot easier to breed when they're in heat versus the cull cows at A.I. school. But still, that cervix was barely as long as my hand and I could grip my entire hand around it with no problem.

Maybe you should heard up to Meadow Lake and Northern rancher could put you to work. :D

Boy, I betcha he could! It would be fun to go A.I. at his place, but I might need to "arm" a few more before he'd let me use his semen. I've only bred 2 cows and practiced on 15 or so.

You would have to learn how to arm off a horse while fighting off a bear with the other arm and sizing up the next cow at the same time. I think it would be good experience for you. NR would be a good mentor in that field.

Holy smoke, I think I'll stick to CO! But still, NR probably could offer a lot of expertise in that area. Next summer when I can drive......
