Subject: BSE UK LIFTING OF EXPORT BAN UPDATE 24 April 2006
Date: April 24, 2006 at 9:42 am PST

24 April 2006 - We now expect the ban on the export of beef and bovine products to be lifted by the EU next week. At present, it is anticipated that the EU legislation will come into effect on 2 May 2006 and that corresponding UK legislation will come into effect on 3 May 2006.

After 3 May, it will remain illegal to export:

beef or products derived from cattle born or reared in the UK and slaughtered before 15 June 2005;
beef containing vertebral column, or products derived from vertebral column, from cattle born or reared in the UK and slaughtered before 3 May 2006.
A leaflet has been produced

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/bse/pdf/guidancebeef2.pdf

explains the responsibilities placed upon exporters by the EU legislation, the steps which must be taken to ensure that goods exported comply with the law, and the measures which will be taken to monitor compliance.

The conditions for export will depend on whether the export is to a European Union (EU) member state or to a third country outside the EU. Third countries may not allow exports, or may set additional conditions. Some EU countries - e.g. France - may take a little time to amend their national rules prohibiting the import of beef and bovine products from UK. The situation with respect to EU countries’ import rules has been made available.
