Final Deficit Figures Available
The Treasury Department announced the final budget figures for Fiscal Year 2006. OMB's most recent estimate missed the actual deficit number - which was $248 billion - by the biggest margin in 21 years. Why the deficit was so much lower than expected has more to do with rising inequality and the declining power of labor than the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, as the Bush administration and congressional Republicans have claimed.

Looking Back In Anger
What a waste of a year. Dana Chasin, Senior Policy

Advisor at OMB Watch, takes a look back at the do-nothing-ness of this year's Congress here and here.

Looking Forward With Hope?
What's on the fiscal policy docket for next year? If the Bush administration has its way, probably entitlement "reform." If the Democrats take power, they may push for incremental and process-oriented fiscal reforms. But unless the Democrats lose, don't expect anything extraordinarily significant to happen in tax and budget policy. As for the coming lame-duck session, progressives will likely have to fight deep cuts to social programs.
