Bull Trouble Question

I'll start out by telling ya'll first thing in the mornin' I'll be getting him in the trailer and headed for the vet. He's in a 180 acre pasture with my little bunch of cows. By the time i saw him tonight, it was too late to do anything with him.

I checked my cows on Sunday and noticed my bull had a swollen sheath. He's pretty mellow and allowed me to feel along his belly and the top of his sheath. Couldnt feel any swelling except for in his lower sheath. His equipment appeared normal. My thought was you know how bulls walk around with "IT" hanging out, maybe he got some dirt or some sage brush leaves up in his sheath. Well today his sheath is bigger and his equipment looks swollen also. Plus he has what looks like a ruptured abcess with infection and a little blood about 10 inches toward his brisket along his belly line. Now i'm wondering about a snake bite or equipment problems. Shouldnt have bred a cow for 2 months or more so can't imagine breaking a penis, but it would be my luck. Any ideas? He is still in great flesh and was chewing his cud when I walked up too him tonight.

My advice would be to sell him soon before he gets worse. Don't give him any vaccines because the withdrawl won't allow him to be butchered. Chances of him recovering are quite slim.

I've seen them recover enough that they could cover a small bunch of cows, but would always have a tendency to reinjure. If you never plan to use him heavy, and he won't have competition, he might recover enough to get some more use out of him.

You can doctor him and hope it works, but just about the time
you turn him out next spring, he'll reinjure himself.

Been there, done that. I agree with Soapweed.

He will become baloney in the near future. But i'm worried they'll discount the heck out of him and i'll get next to nothing for him. Killer bulls have been between .55 to .65 at Salina Utah Producers barn. I'm hoping to get him better and ship him after the residule date on the treatment. The sale isnt til next Tuesday at the earliest.

Stick to the take him to the vet plan. Before anything he needs a thorough exam. The advice about medication is very good too. Wait and see what the vet says first.

And then make sure you let us know how it turns out.

That's a tough pill to take H but I agree with Soap and FH. I could send you a set of moose horns and you could sell tags on him.

You could call him Bullwinkle. :D

I have a bull in just about the same shape. He would have been shipped but I thought i still had a bull in the pasture so my count was out. He didn't heal up quite as well as i thought he must have.

We once had a the equipment operated on here . The vet cut it and sewed it back together. With long rest the bull was ok for two more years.

Another man messed with one for a long time soaking it in epsin salts with a boot straped to the bull with changing solutions for a while. The bull died of a horablie death. He could not uninate. By the time to went to the expense to take him to the University he died up there to Urinic posioning.
They kept his reproductive tract out the show the man it was a horiable site.
Sometimes they do not discount them ( very rare) but get them to the sale QUICK before it gets any worse or they may discount him a bunch or not take him at all.
FYI unrealted but bull sale issue. A local trucker had a 2500 pound bull he said he took the bull to four sale barns before he found a barn than would take him. They said he was to big for the kill bull buyers at the plants he would be heading to..

Dump him fast.... We kept a bull around that we pulled earlier thinking he would get better...... He didn't....... He got worse...... By the time we could sell him we got 30 cents for him......Hurry!!!!

But still check with your vet. If he has a fever, or an infection, you may be very unhappy with whatever price you get. It helps a lot if you can tell a buyer that the vet has OK'd him. We've seen injured animals go for some very scary prices.

Sell him and take the discounted price.

Take him to the vet and drug him and then sell him for about what you spent on him.

Shoot him and bury him costing you time and disposal costs.

Use gcreeks moose horns and sell a shoot to a wanna be hunter.

Looks like a no brainer to me H.

Or Bull Broke Winkle
Vet check, maybe some drugs and then gone would be my thoughts, unless the vet is going to charge more than $50.
