Bulls for your veiwing pleasure

I kept a couple bull calves intact last fall. Neither are purebred, but I have some folks around me who buy commercial bulls to run with their cattle. They had expressed interest in seeing how some of my calves would turn out as bulls. So I kept two and sent them to my cousin's place for the winter. He feeds lots of cattle had the room for two more. They have been fed a mix of oat hay, long stem alfalfa and some silage. I'm not trying to finish them, just get them in decent flesh. We went down yesterday to look them over and help around my cousin's place. I took some pictures for you to inspect and tell me what you think. I already know what I think, so tell me what you think and we'll compare notes.

This calf is out of a small framed Angus cow and a Select Sires bull. BW was 80 and he was born Jan. 27th 2010. His 205 day weight was 613. Sorry for all the winter hair. It's been a cold and wet one.

I like to see more depth, like when you look at their profile, 60-70% body and 30-40% leg. Preference to the 70-30. That's just me H. THeir young and growing and don't look their best at that age. You know what works in your environment alot better than I do.

My bulls don't look like ribbon winners either right now, but I know what they'll look like by August on grass with cows based on the dams and sires and past performance. 3 of them are sold so at least 3 others share my perspective. lol

If they'll cover 30 or 40 cows in the desert and come home in decent shape I guess they'll work.

it's not always fair to judge from a photo, but personally, i'd like to see more rib, depth of body, more volume basically. they look a bit leggy for my taste.
if i seen them in person i would probably change my opinion all together

:agree: with Justin,
Right at this point I don't see much 'bull' in the first one.
There just isn't enough there for me.
The second one looks more promising IMHO.

I agree with you all totally! I want a lot more depth and capacity in a bull. While the 2nd bull has decent length and i like him better, both are going into the finishing pen to become beef. I'll stick to raising steers. :D Thanks for your input!

I agree they seem a little "Pencil gutted" to me. :?

Growing pretty good right now. :)

Do you know the model number on that old Case?

Interesting set of hoses coming off this side. :?

Cute kids H. I'm glad to see they took their looks from their mamma's side. Personally, on the bulls, I think a little depth would go along way with them. They just looked a little long to me. Its not fair to judge stock by a picture though, or to critique them at this age. If you know the cows and the bulls that they are out of, you may want to leave them intact a while longer to mature. That's like telling a 16 year old kid that he'll never amount to much. If you can afford the experiment a little longer, don't cut them yet. We did the same thing a couple of years ago and an extra three months made a lot of difference. Once it warmed up some and he started eating green grass he really took off.

I am with the general concensus. I like to see a bull thicker and closer to the ground than those two. If I was to pick one of them it would be #2.

Kids look good too. :D

So does the bare ground.
