Bush on NAFTA

President Bush said the 12-year old agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico has boosted the economies of all three countries and the cooperation on border security will keep commerce flowing.

Bush, confronting rising protectionism in Congress, touted the benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement as he concluded a summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"NAFTA", which has created a lot of political controversy in our countries, has yielded prosperity", Bush said. "The question we are faced with is, how do we continue to enhance prosperity?"

---------------------
Bush must be counting Mexico's single largest source of revenue, dollars sent back from the US by Mexicans who fled the country, as a part of that "prosperity". Funny thing about prosperous countries, I never envisioned a mass exodus OUT of the country to be a sign of prosperity! Knowing that kind of puts a big red flag on any of his comments about NAFTA.....

I remember reading last year, that during V. Fox's tenure as president of Mexico, less than a 100,000 were created a year in that country. I can't find the source now but that seems unbelievable with the natural rescources down there.
