I agree the government should not worry about special programs for people loosing there homes. People need to be accountable for themselves. If they can not afford their homes then they need to sell, loose them and get something that they can afford. Don't need my tax dollars going to help people that got in over their heads.

But as for fixing Iraq's problems, the reports seem to show they are getting better. But you have to dig hard to see the improvements being made in Iraq, no way the liberal media will let you know about them. God forbid then Hillary would not get elected.

Probably our own troops shooting. If I was the troops I would be shooting at any airplane that had some Congressman in it!

The Iraq war is a big event it can not be judged by a single event. How about all the kids going to school? How about the hospitals being built, the roads. How about women being able to vote, anyone being able to vote. How about first time they got to freely elect their own leaders. How about programs for clothing and shoes. There is plenty of things going on positive in Iraq. You would think the media would want to show the good that our soldiers are doing not the just the bad going on.

What happened to America standing behind our troops and pulling together to fight the greater evils. I guess that ended with WWII and especially with Vietnam and the liberal instilled a deep root of failure in America's citizens.

Plane with U.S. Lawmakers Shot at in Iraq

WASHINGTON - A military airplane carrying four members of the U.S. Congress came under fire over Iraq on Thursday but the plane was not hit and no one was hurt, a spokesman for one of the lawmakers said on Friday.

The C-130 cargo aircraft conducted evasive maneuvers after a nighttime takeoff from Baghdad, said Ken Lundberg, spokesman for Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, who was on the plane.

In addition to Martinez, the plane was carrying fellow Republican Sens. Richard Shelby of Alabama and James Inhofe of Oklahoma, and Alabama Rep. Robert "Bud" Cramer, a Democrat.

Lundberg said Martinez had been told three rocket-propelled grenades were fired at the plane. But a senior U.S. defense official in Washington said small arms fire appeared to have been responsible.

"He (Martinez) had just taken his body armor off and was getting ready to snooze," Lundberg said the senator told him. "Then there was a flash of light, and the plane started banking in different directions."

"The whole incident was over in three to five minutes," Lundberg said, and the aircraft flew on to Amman, Jordan.

A statement from U.S.-led forces in Iraq said the plane "observed surface-to-air fire" upon departure from Baghdad and dispensed flares and conducted "standard evasive maneuvers."

Lawmakers Who Were Almost Shot Down Declare ‘Significant Progress’ In Iraq

Yesterday, a plane carrying three U.S. senators and a member of the House was forced to take evasive maneuvers to avoid rocket-propelled grenades as they took off from Baghdad. “It was a scary moment,” said Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL). “There were a few minutes there where I wondered: ‘Have we been hit? Are we OK?’” added Rep. Bud Cramer (D-AL).

Despite the close call, the lawmakers continued to insist that progress was being made in Iraq:

– “Incredibly significant progress has been made on the military front,” Martinez told the Orlando Sentinel.

– “I believe the surge, from observations…that they have made a lot of progress with the surge. It’s not definitive, but it’s on the right track,” Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) told the Tuscaloosa News.

– Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) told the Tulsa World that “his visit allowed him to witness firsthand the progress resulting from the ongoing troop surge in Iraq.”

The senators’ assessments are contradicted by the conclusion in the Government Accountability Office’s upcoming report on Iraq, a draft of which was leaked to the Washington Post yesterday. The “strikingly negative” draft report says that “Iraq has failed to meet all but three of 18 congressionally mandated benchmarks for political and military progress”:

“While the Baghdad security plan was intended to reduce sectarian violence, U.S. agencies differ on whether such violence has been reduced,” it states. While there have been fewer attacks against U.S. forces, it notes, the number of attacks against Iraqi civilians remains unchanged.
