We haven't been on here much lately, we've been busy. We have about 80 cows to calve for spring, they're moving right along. Also weaned our fall calves, all of you know that takes at least a week. I don't care how you do the weaning, we have tried all kinds of things and it still takes at least a week.
We also have ET calves to vaccinate with their 2nd shots because they leave here before the end of the month. Spent 3 days weighing them because our scale was goofed up.
Had to PG the cows, sort into different groups of who goes where. We have some to calve in spring, we have some to go to town, we have a bunch to kick out onto range. We did this all today, got the older cows kicked out on range (happy, happy girls) but had to go around the fence (a full day job) before kicking them out, man the elk sure do a number on fences :x
My face is red from sunburn/windburn, my eyes are red from the *$&% dust.
A good thing tho, I do the 2AM check for springs, a cow was acting like she had a breech calf, and you guys need to listen to us ladies when we are concerned about a cow. This cow was running around, getting baby calves to follow her around, tail switching, hind end very, very loose, where there should have been a water bag there was none. 1-1/2 hrs later, same thing, nothing going on back there. The cow was feeling some pressure, knew her calf was due to be born and if there was any better communication between a cow and a human, I understood it. She just didn't have anything in the birth canal to make her want to push. Checking again 1-1/2 hr later, she had just a little bit of water bag out, my check was over but when sw took over, I told him what she was going through and he ended up running her into the barn. He was backwards, his feet were caught just below the pelvic brim so it was almost like a breech. Got calf out in time, nice big baby boy, and momma is sooooooooooo proud!!!
Ladies, listen to your instincts, and if your spouses say wait, DON'T. WE LADIES KNOW because we've had babies ourselves.
Anyone have something to add? Like a similar story?
I guess I'll shut up before I get in trouble
