Clinton Proposes $5,000 ‘Baby Bonds’

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 29, 2007

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should receive a $5,000 “baby bond” from the government to help pay for college or buying a house.

Mrs. Clinton made her suggestion at a forum sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus.

“I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time,” she said, “so that when that young person turns 18, if they have finished high school, they will be able to access it to go to college or maybe they will be able to make that down payment on their first home.”

Mrs. Clinton did not estimate the cost of such a program or how it would be financed. Four million babies a year are born in the United States.

Let's see....

4,000,000
X $5,000
$20,000,000,000

Did I do that right? Only twenty BILLION dollars a year? What a deal....

Who was it that said that the Republic will last about as long as it takes for people to find out that they can vote to give themselves money out of the public treasury?

While I'm not really for this-- the only thing that would make me look twice at it would be the "graduate high school" incentive.....

Altho over here on the local Rez they probably give out way more than that in weekly, monthly, yearly awards for attendance and grades- and I just heard on the radio that the American Indian graduation rate nationwide is 54%, while the nationwide rate is 70%...

Only thing better would be to provide free education at a state university so long as you pass. A good pass fail system, and I bet the savings would be awesome. Less minimum wage folks, more high dollar taxpayers, Less street people and less prison inmates would mean less prison expenses........I bet if you calculated the projected savings combined with the projected increase in income, it would be a huge net gain.

Not to mention that 20 billion would be put into a savings account that would provide investment capital for small and local businesses and would only be drawn against when it is spent for education.......sounds like a pretty good idea.

But then the liberals would decide that it's not fair to make certain minorities finish high school just to get 'their' money. And before you know it, they would 'streamline' the process for those 'disadvantaged' (disadvantaged=freeloading bums) minorities.

And they would 'streamline' it more every year - just to buy more votes. In just a few years of democrat control of Congress, Shaquita would be getting a $5,000 check as soon as she checked into the public hospital maternity ward to have her crack baby.

You're probably right-- but it can't be much worse than we're doing today sending $Billions a day to the Halliburton/Blackwater/etal contractors in Iraq to hire employees thru unbid contracts from all over southeast Asia, Europe, and the Arab world so those dollars can go back to those countries...At least this money would be recycled in the US and a US crack dealer could be profitting

Then thru the Republican trickle down theory Cadillac and some caddy dealer would profit- some US mink coat store, jewelry stores, and some ammo company- along with a few of the funeral homes would all make money

Does the word "investment" mean anything to you? Investing means you get more than you pay out, as in investing in livestock. Spending is what you neocons do as in spending billions of dollars a month and thousands of lives in Iraq with no hope of a financial, moral, ethical, or security return. See, that is spending, which is what neocons do. Investing is what I prefer to do.

I guess it depends on what you consider "investing." I consider killing terrorists an investment - no matter where it is. Government handouts like the one hitlery is proposing have traditionally only served to grow the welfare class. At the expense of the working class.

It's the parent's job to provide for their own chirren's future. It's not my job to give them incentive to have more kids than they can support.

I'd rather spend five grand sterilizing people who have kids they can't pay for. Now THAT's an investment in the future.

Perhaps, in your own erudite way, you can explain it to me? While you are at it, explain to me the differences between micro and macro economics, the Keynesian theory of economics, the importance of increasing our rate of savings and the impact of a lack of such savings on the economy?

Right MG. I wondered if anyone would pick up on what I was trying to do with GP. Since reasoning didn't work I thought a dose of his own antics might work. Probably not though
