By tradition, Primeminister Brown & Obama Traded Gifts!

Mr Brown’s gifts included an ornamental desk pen holder made from the oak timbers of Victorian anti-slaver HMS Gannet, once named HMS President.

Mr Obama was so delighted he has already put it in pride of place in the Oval Office on the Resolute desk which was carved from timbers of Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute.

Another treasure given to the U.S. President was the framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to symbolise Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.

Finally, Mr Brown gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

Gordon Brown has been given a collection of 25 classic American films on DVD as his official gift from Barack Obama.

The Prime Minister flew home from his successful trip to Washington this morning with the ’special collector’s box’ of films hidden in his luggage.

No 10 had tried to keep the present a secret, refusing to answer reporters who asked what President Obama had given to mark the reaffirmation of the special relationship.

It was a British newspaper that ran the article!
I learned to read when I was 4....

I do admit Mr. Browns gifts were amazing...I'd love that Churchill Bio.

And I'm pretty sure Obama didn't personally pick the gifts.....

Yep-- and a lot better than the junk Hollywood makes today...Before video tapes and DVD's we had one of those Disc players- and one of the first movies we had was The Searchers- and I'll bet my kids watched that 500 times....
I think I have every John Wayne movie that is on video....

Obviously you have missed the symbolism, in the gifts given to Obama! but I'm sure Brown will place those DVD's right on his desk, and watch one, whenever he's got the time!

I would have at least given him a set of the Playboy Bunnies.."After Dark" series DVD's. Or maybe a flick from Larry Flynt...................

With those he would have had reason to hide them in his luggage. 8)

Do you believe Obama picked those gifts himself???

I'm not sure if your referring to me about the obviously I missed the symbolism of Browns gifts, cause I did notice that{learned to read at 4 and all} also being half British,I'm pretty dammed impressed with the gifts, but then when I was all plumbed up about the gifts then I read andybobs Ted for Knighthood thread and I deflated my feathers...

Your trying to make Obama look bad about the gifts when I'm pretty danged sure he had NOTHING to do with it,some other American chose those gifts....I'm sure there's some symbolism in the movies AND Gosh could you hear the complaining if the gifts were hugely expensive if these times of financial hardships.... :?

Like I said....just NO pleasing you guys.......!!!!!

You bring up a good point Mrs. Greg, does he not have anybody working for him with a little bit of Class? And sense of history when it comes to these gifts?

There's your task for today,finding out who picked the gift{although I don't think the gift was bad,its just that GB's was VERY good :D }

Now answer this....Just how much Biatching would have gone on if the gifts was more expensive like Browns were?{shudder,I'm acting like Sandhusker now :cry: :wink: }

Edit....I found this little piece of info...hmmmm,interesting....

The Prime Minister has not had the best of luck when receiving gifts from U.S. presidents.

He was given a fur-trimmed brown leather bomber jacket by George W. Bush during first trip to America in summer 2007.

Emblazoned with the presidential seal and the logo of Camp David, it also boasted a black patch bearing the name 'Rt Hon Gordon Brown'.

Commentators gleefully pointed out that the garment was hardly in keeping with Mr Brown's usual sober attire of business suit and tie.

Not surprisingly, it later emerged that the PM had decided not to keep the gift. Instead, he gave it to charity.

It's not the expense!, it would have been nice to give one of the US's most secure allies, something that every "Joe" couldn't go down to the local Blockbuster, and buy!

I'm pretty sure 99% of Americans would have a hard time getting their hands on the type of gifts that were given to Obama.

Another good point though, that you bring up. Where are this Presidency's priorities.

They try to save money on a symbolic gift, but waste it on such other garbage?

Hypo....your making a non issue into an issue...it was a gift, doesn't matter if it was as symbolic as GB's was.

If your 9 yr old son gave you a baseball he caught at the last game you took him to,as a Xmas gift, yet your 3 yr old daughter gave you a pic she cut out of a magazine...the gift the 3 yr old gave wasn't as important to you because it wasn't symbolic......HARDLY....

Start connecting dots Mrs. Greg.

It might be a small issue, that gives us a little more insight into Obama's character and his level of respect for those allies that have stood by the US forever!

I guess, I didn't look at it that way. When you take into account the maturity levels, the gifts that they gave, do make sense!

Did I get this right? Mrs Greg said Obama compared to a three year old?

You're right, it wouldn't matter what the gift is, Obama would just give it back later anyway. Like the Winston Churchill bust.

As the highest representative of the people and Government, the President accepts gifts on behalf of the United States of America

It was a disgrace. And those across the pond noticed.

It was all going so well. The dresses, the brains, the Vogue cover shoot – everything so far about Michelle Obama has left us wide-mouthed in admiration. It seemed there was no end to her fabulousness. Then Mr and Mrs Brown came to stay.

Like all good guests, Sarah Brown arrived bearing gifts for the children, Malia and Sasha. And they were really nice presents. A bit of thought had clearly gone into choosing them: Top Shop dresses (with matching necklaces) and a selection of books by British authors. Lovely.

Mrs Brown may have two boys but she certainly knows the way to a little girl’s heart. These were gifts chosen in the true spirit of present-giving: to please the recipient, not the giver.

In return Mrs Obama gave the Brown children, Fraser and John, two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter. Fair enough on the helicopter part, always a popular choice with small boys; but Marine One? It’s not as though anyone needs reminding that Barack Obama is President or that he has his own helicopter. Short of giving the boys Action Man models of her own husband smiting the evil forces of neoconservatism, Mrs Obama’s gesture could not have been more solipsistic or more inherently dismissive of Mrs Brown.

Not only did she demonstrate that she spent approximately three seconds contemplating the needs of the Brown boys (having an aide pop to the White House gift shop for a piece of merchandising does not imply a great deal of thought), she appeared to show a most uncharacteristic lapse of judgment.

It might have been possible to overlook the incident were it not for the official photograph.

The White House released one picture of the two women and it does not appear to have been selected with any kind of special relationship in mind. There is a menacing bunch of pink peonies in the foreground and the angle is most unflattering to Mrs Brown, who has the air of a woman very much in need of a stiff drink.

Whether deliberate or not, the whole thing feels like a snub.

As for Fraser and John, their parents’ trip to America will always be remembered as the time that “Mum and Dad went to see the President, and all we got was this lousy plastic helicopter”.

The utter lack of class and respect the Obama's paid to the Brown's visit is very sad.

Everyday, Obama, whether it be on the economy or foreign diplomacy or the lack of change and hope in his governing, he makes steps towards becoming one of the worst POTUS in American history.

The tackiest thing I have ever heard! No thought went into these gifts! How embarressing to all Americans. You can't buy class and the Obama's simply don't have any.

Simply pitiful. Brown should send the O's some takeaway fish and chips. Sent over via slow boat.

FTA: ~~'One reason for the secrecy might be that the gift seems markedly less generous and thoughtful than the presents taken to Washington by the Prime Minister.'~~

And this is the Messiah guy who was supposed to make our International friendships better?
