For all you cattle feeders, Mobridge Livestock will have a good sale this Thursday with over 3000 head of these calves being Red Angus and Red Angus cross. Over half of them are suppose to be Source and Age Tagged. I will be their supporting our bull customers. If anyone is wanting any of these calves, let me know and I would be glad to help.

Eventually we will reach equilibrium because the end product will go up. But the first thing to get squeezed is the feeder and calf market.

And who can blame the cattle feeders? More of them will go out of business if corn stays at 5-6-7????.

Bad deal.

Not that I know much about it, but don't the feeders, or most of them,
have their corn locked in by now?

Farmer Feeders - lots of them most likely do

The big feedlots - most likely not, as they lock in as they get a load of calves in.

What farmer would feed 5 and 6 dollar corn.... Not us...... Corn prices will fall by the weekend.... But what it will do to the cattle market is anyone's guess....

Yes.... But what happens to the cattle that farmers usually buy that they won't buy because of selling their grain??? Why do we need speculative buying??

The good thing Katrina is the lack of cattle, so alot of the feeders you are talking about who isn't going to feed anything won't hurt that bad (would sure be nice if they were wanting to feed though). The demand seems to be there and this is keeping the prices up. Just watched 570 lbs steers in Central MN sell for $1.20/cwt. That area is usually about $6 to $8 back from NE & SD prices.

Well lets hope this is just a blip in the market and calves stay strong... Soap is selling some today, so maybe he will have a little perspective for things to come..

I sure hope Soapweed had better luck than the calf sellers had at OKC today:

Oklahoma National Stockyards, Oklahoma City, OK. - Open
Feeder Weighted Average Report for Monday 10/11/2010
(The closing weighted average report will be sent later this evening)

Estimated Receipts: 8300 Last Monday: 7407 Yr Ago Monday: 11,254

Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 2.00-3.00 lower.
At mid-session steer and heifer calves 5.00-8.00 lower. Higher Corn
futures market leans on feeder cattle prices. Buyers continue to be
selective, and with cooler weather approaching continue to discount
smaller calves. Demand moderate for all classes.

I didn't sell any today but did last Thursday. They weighed 608 pounds and brought $121.75 per cwt. Have some consigned for this coming Thursday also. :?

We sold some last Thursday as well. We sold a pen of 39 608 weight steers and they brought $1.19, and a pen of 69 steers at 545 lbs brought $1.26.
Our cows averaged about .55. British cows were were well of the mark, I have no idea why.

Silver and Soapweed good job !!! Thats a good ticket, I like to see ALL of us in the agriculture sector make a decient living, these calf prices are good and the folks that are raising corn should be able to make money also!!! I am no expert at anything, but I will say I made a heck of a lot more money in cattle when they were high than when they were cheap, just needed to be sure to do your homework!!! No offense to anyone. 101

I have heard it said repeatedly that you don't make money feeding cheap corn to cattle. Not sure why that would be so, but I hope it's true in the next year or so because then everyone should make money for a change.

I had a little oppurtunity come my way today, my father-in-law had some strays show up at his place a few weeks ago. The owner was really not interested or making any attempt to get them, so asked me to have a look, the owner wanted $500 a round, 3 head, I sold them at auction today, take home of $1940, pretty good ROI for two days of ownership.

The calf market has fell flat, as rarely did any class of cattle bring a $1 Lb. I am sure glad I sold my light 5's for $1.32 a month ago, as today they would have been lucky to bring 90 cents.

I am thinking pretty hard on backgrounding some calves thru the winter, as I always had better luck making money on them, when no one else really wanted them.

A good day today, plus a little rain. :D 8)
