Hi Circle M, I'm pretty new to cattle and am probably the last person on this forum who should answer you, but here I am. :) I'm farther west than most of the members so I'm apt to be on later.
You should wait about 60 days after your cow calves before breeding her again. If you keep more than one cow, you'll know when one's in heat because the others will begin mounting her and she'll stand still for them. If she isn't in heat, she won't stand still when mounted but will move away.
I hope this helps.

Try doing some research on gestation length of beef cows. Decide what date you would like to start to calve and turn your bulls out accordingly.

Most cattlemen like to calve in a 42 to 60 day period but it takes work to get your herd confirming to those times if the bull has been allowed to run with the cows year round.

Circle M here is a link to a gestation table.

Note that this table is based on a 283 day gestation length. Length of gestation will vary with breeds of cattle but this will give you a ball park estimate.

Good Luck.

Maybe you should've worked for someone with cattle before you jumped into them yourself!! I hope you learn fast...and I wish you luck!!

I've got AI'ed heifers due in a week and it won't happen again next year. March 15th will be early enough next year it's to cold to calve this early and to tell the truth the end of march can be pretty harsh also.

To answer the first question, if the cow has a natural, easy birth, she could come around in heat in a month from her calving date. Maybe more, maybe less. We started calving in January, and it was not unusual to have cows cycling in February. We always put our bulls out around the 1st of April for a second week of January start date of calving. By that time, we want the bull out, because we were sick of dealing with the bulling cows. Nothing stupider than cows chasing bulling cows! Doesn't matter what's in there way, they'll just plow through them, stomping on whatever gets in their way, calves included.

I have noticed that most of my cows will come into heat about 41 to 46 days post calving. I have had cood luck breding on this heat cycle but I think the next heat should give you a better conception rate.
