Went out and helped my neighbors west of me vaccinate their calves. They have them contracted to an outfit out in eastern Utah. We vaccinated, weighed and tagged 70 calves last night. Loading the alley.

My friend John who is the bovine superintendent and my kids helping.

The calves averaged 580 on the steers and 535 on the heifers. I thought they are a nice uniform bunch of calves. They are getting $1.13 on the steers and $1.08 on the heifers. The big salebarn in Utah was giving .98 on 550 to 600 weights last week so they are satisfied.

They run with a neighbor who runs a Red Angus bull. Looks like he covered atleast one of thiers!

I took the kids and they sure are great helpers. Cal would bring calves up to the alley and they'd help keep the alleyway movin'. John and i were busy on the other end on the scale and vaccine guns. If ya leave your kids home they won't learn to love this life and how to help. Plus it teaches Dad patience!!!!!

More teenage bovines fixin' to move out to college soon.

Olson's run angus bulls on crossbred cows. A little charlois, tarantaise and even some simmetal. They run a little bigger framed cattle than i do but they have a lot of meadows on their place and a nice winter permit on BLM ground. And by golly, they are their cows and they can do as they please!
They are great neighbors and their family roots go way back in this part of the country.

Then we went up on the mountain to pick chokecherrys. Some years like this one, those cherry get loaded. Fun was had by all!!!!

Reach! And as a bonus, we have zero bears to watch out for while pilfering berrys. On a down note we have no bears to watch out for while harvesting pre-bottled jam!

Now that's what makes life grand! A family that plays together stays together! Purple hands and happy hearts!!!!!

Although if ya put your boy in the dryer people may yell at ya! Just so we are clear, he put himself in there and lucky for us couldn't reach the on button! By the way, my wife put up 19 bottles of chokecherry jelly. Bring the bread and head this way!

Pretty neat pictures there.
We love chokecherry syrup. We put some in the bottom of a glass and then add Squirt. Pretty good drink.

It's always fun having the kids help work the cattle.

Chokecherries were good in our area also. I think I have picked somewhere around 80 quarts this summer. The trees are still loaded, but the women have started making threatening gestures if I bring home any more. We also had quite a few sandcherries but they are quite a bit more work to put up. I was told, in no uncertain terms that 20 quarts were enough of those.

Went for a ride last Sunday and we ended up picking 5 gallons of Chokecherries, was almost like stripping a cows teat.
Also picked a couple gallons of service berries.
Sue spent labor day making syrup and jelly.

I read in a magazine somewhere to put Chokecherry syrup in a glass and add Sprite to make a delicious drink.

Of course, you have to make the Chokecherry syrup first... :p

You do live in a good place with neighbors like you have...sometimes our neighbors are just like part of the family...this is a good thing!

Our plums are really good this year also...it's been quite a few years since we've seen that. My grapes did well also this year...must be a good year for fruit..speaking of that...I've got ton's of pie apples to get rid of..so come on over and pick what you want they're loaded!

My freezer and pantry is loaded as well. I enjoy canning and freezing and have put up 20 pint of grape jam, 5 qt of grape juice, 30 pints of applesauce, 20 pint of zuchinni and summer squash, 6 pt of zuchinni/apricot jam, 10 pint of green beans, and 3 qt of tomato juice. A pretty good supply for a single guy! Yesterday was a rainy day so I helped my folks peel apples and we put 14 apple pies in the freezer as well as 20 qt of applesauce. They already have nearly 75 qt of applesauce. My mother also made 50 pints of grape jam. She gives some to my sisters and their families for Christmas.....that's all my nephews and nieces look forward to....Gramma's grape jam! Of course it is much better than anything you buy in the store! I just wish they understood how much work it is to get it. Oh well! They are all town kids and sadly will probably never know or enjoy the process of growing, harvesting and making your own food.
