Starting with new houses and to be retrofitted within two years to all toilets in Calgary, toilet flushes will be monitored via a meter, similar to those currently used to calculate total water consumption.
Each home will be allowed five free flushes a day, after which each empty bowl will cost five cents. The total added to your regular utility bill.
“People who live in limited utility areas know the old adage about ‘if it’s yellow let it mellow,’ and we believe that’s good advice heading into the future,” said Lou Bidet, manager of wastewater recycling.
