Dairy Cattle: Showdown At The OK Corral

A proposal to remove 300,000 cows from the national dairy herd could pit the dairy industry against the beef industry.

The Western States Dairy Producers Trade Association will ask Congress for money to fund a herd retirement through the Cooperatives Working Together program.

Group members say CWT funds could be leveraged by either a loan guarantee or matching funds offered by the federal government. Funds could immediately remove 300,000 cows.

Brad Bateman, Utah dairy producer and chairman of the Western States Dairy Producers Trade Association, said the chances of gaining industry backing for the plan “is very good. This appears to be a proposal that is getting support.” Bateman said milk prices will only get back to a sustainable level “if we take out a bunch of cows and bring stability to the market. You can do that the ugly way or you can do it by being proactive. We have the system in place (CWT) to take cows out in an orderly manner and we should make the most of it. We can take out 200,000 to 300,000 cows and make an investment for the future.”

The herd retirement, if done immediately, would avoid large numbers of dairy cows being sent to market in the spring, when most beef cattle producers bring their animals to market.

Meanwhile, the National Cattleman’s Beef Association sent a letter to members of the U.S. Senate last Thursday opposing this effort. For more on the NCBA response, read "NCBA opposes dairy buy-out" on dairyherd.com.

Dejavu. Sort of like granting amnesty for illegal aliens. Aren't dairy cows just as sweet and loveable as a horse?
