What about high nitrates in some of your feed. With the drought that might be an issue. I know nitrates can cause problems even at lower levels.

I did find something that worked wonderfully for poking a sack just this afternoon. It is a hotshot with no charge. Worked like a charm. :wink:

One year we had a lot of trouble with tough bags... I took a shepherd's crook calf catcher, the extendable kind, and duck taped a pocket knife to the end. It gives you about a 10' reach extended. It cut through a lot of tough bags.

In my situation-- where I check both cows and heifers- tag and weigh- around 6AM- again maybe at noon- and again before sunset- this would become a major pain in the butt if I had to be there guaranteeing every calf could get some air...

Definitely sounds like something the cow scientist/experts should get on---
BUT sometimes I would not expect results for some time-- as it took those folks years to find out that in cold winters we had higher BW calves--- and some of those "experts" still refuse to believe it....
