Can Republicans escape their extremists?

The harshness of the rhetorical salvos is feeding worries among some Republicans that the GOP is increasingly perceived as a right-wing, Southern regional party.

I would add:

I would add that this "extremism" is hurting the Dems, if they don't put a stop to it, by providing proof, it might just grow and be the end of them in 2010 and 2012.

Instead of just labelling it, as something you don't want, why not put an end to it, by disproving it?

According to the polls (that you used to post here) that right-wing Southern evangelical/pentecostal regional party is gaining ground on the Democrats.

You didn't look very close then- as the polls were showing it was one of the reasons many of the younger generations and even old moderate Repubs were fleeing the Repub Party....And from watching the Repubs for Obama sites pre election- with the number of Repubs that jumped to supporting Obama after McCain brought on Palin- and seeing their posts that her Pentacostal preachings (especially with Repub women)- and anti birth control beliefs were the #1 and #2 reasons....

Until the Repubs can get past their extremist religious and social agenda as their base- I don't think they can be a party of power again...
When you got the Dr. Dobsons (who isn't even an ordained Minister) out telling folks who to vote for and who not to- and questioning the leading fiscal conservative Repub candidates ability to lead because of the type underwear he wears- and his "cult" followings of his religion- you can't ever see a united front....

What are today's polls showing?

It all depends on which one you read. They all show him sinking.

Here's a more liberal one: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article6736043.ece

White people should have a Reparations Tax levied against them to help
offset the damage that slavery did to the Black Race.

Ten percent sounds about right. Most of the money would go to fund
social programs for minorities and to help right the racial wrongs in this
country.

So you are saying that some of posters on an Obama website are extremely nutty and equating them with some of the tinfoil helmet-wearing crowd on PB, who are also extremely nutty?

You won't have any argument from me on this one!

Glad you can admit it!

In answer to the original question "Can the Republicans escape their extremists?", a few years ago I would have said yes.

But as moderates like Voinovich, Jeffords, Specter, and virtually all New England Republicans have left the party, I'm more inclined to say "no".

It is looking more and more like extremists make up a significant part of the Republican base.

the Republicans will never escape their "extremists" as long as Democrats are defining "Extremists".

In that case (Dem definition), 68.7% of the American public should be "Extremists" as of January 1, 2010 based on the current curve.
