Producers divided on government's role in livestock markets

TWIN Falls, Idaho - With a handful of Senate bills afloat that address concentration in livestock markets, producers were in Washington recently to speak their piece to the Senate and House ag committees.

While all acknowledged concentration in the industry, they differed on what should be done about it.

The National Farmers Union, American Farm Bureau Federation and R-CALF USA sat squarely on one side of the issue, while the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council and American Meat Institute sat squarely on the other.

The crux of the matter is whether the government should get involved. NFU, AFBF and R-CALF say yes, the other groups say no.

The Senate bills proposed would ban packer ownership of animals, reform the Captive Supply Act regarding formula pricing, strengthen the Packers and Stockyards Act by establishing a department to investigate mergers and sales, and increase competition and transparency among packers.

Here was the AFB's stand on major issues during the hearing about GIPSA in April:

The Farm Bureau spoke in support of some pieces: Packer loopholes, voluntary arbitration, contract disclosure, mandatory price reporting, special counsel, voluntary NAIS and voluntary COOL.

They still have a long way to go before representing producer interests, but in some cases they are coming along.

The government already is involved. The decision they fact is to either do what the folks who vote want or what the folks who "donate" want.

The Government has done everything it can to pass regulations that have closed down nearly all the small packers...leaving only the Big Business, big contributing ones.
The Government has allowed Big business to control every aspect of any industry they are involved in.
If it is not stopped by the Voters, it will never be stopped! Why would the politicians stop it on their own. That is were they get the MONEY to make money with! (get elected)
Keep watching!
