The 1883 novel, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, cemented the myth we know today: A noble whose land has been unjustly taken turns outlaw in Sherwood forest, battling the evil King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham to restore his name and bring back the rightful king.

By the 20th century, Robin had become a sort of proactive socialist do-gooder, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. In Ayn Rand's book, Atlas Shrugged, one character says that Robin Hood is an immoral symbol, because his charity was financed with wealth he did not own, while at the same time taking on the characteristics of the modern-day Tea Party revolutionary: Robin also battled unjust taxes, and much of the money he took from the central government was redistributed back to local jurisdictions. In this respect, he was Sarah Palin with a longbow.
