Canadian beef industry will rally, Agriculture Canada predicts

by Pete Hisey on 2/22/05 for Meatingplace.com

Livestock sales, spurred by increased slaughter capacity and the gradual reopening of the American market, will grow by 12 percent, according to Agriculture Canada, with Alberta reaping most of the benefit. Net income from the agricultural market will grow 19 percent in the province, with a 26 percent increase in cattle sales to $5.3 billion (Canadian) leading the way.

Nationally, however, lower prices in the grain market, where early frosts in 2004 affected the quantity and quality of harvests, will drag down net cash income from agricultural products nationwide by 8 percent, the organization said.

Does this 12% increase in livestock sales mean an offsetting 12% drop in US sales and prices-- -$77 fats, -$97 calves and -$40 culls or more if the demand drops because of the "questionable science" and no export markets?
