Canucks - a Question

Everyone that owns the animal besides the slaughter houses needs to tag the animal with their own tag and submit it to ccia.

And yes they do keep records on who buys and sells each animal, it is called trace back. We can trace an animal to every single destination throughout it's life until slaughter.

If a calf has been to 20 farms in it's lifetime it will all be recorded and each farm needs to have all records of bought and fed feed for their cattle..

Makes sense to me. I like the implant id under the skin though way better than an ear tag or bolus tag.
I think this is the way we will probably be moving..

As of now, when an animal is born, you tag it. This is the only RFID tag it gets. If it loses a tag, and you replace it, you submit the new number to the CCIA database, and cross reference it to the lost number. This applies to cattle you have bought, as well as the ones you raise, so we always record the numbers of cattle we buy, so we can cross-reference using the feedlot tag as a way of knowing what the original number was.

This fall, there are trials being run in various auction marts to find the best type and setup of scanners to track movement, and the next step is to move to full tracking, start to finish.

It is coming, and there's not much we can do to change it, so we might as well accept it. If it helps gain new market access, then good. If it saves our butts if FMD ever comes here, then better.
