3 pirates dead....one in custody.....Capt'n is fine

Can't be true Kola-- according to our ranchersnet rightwingernut experts you're supposed to blindly rush in all guns blazing before you get your ducks in a row (like a certain President who will remain unnamed did when he went nationbuilding in a sandpit).....  :p

Glad to hear he's OK- apparently from the news reports his family has been aware of this for sometime....

You're forgetting that your Democrats voted for that.....again....

I'm very glad that he is. Now I hope they go on a pirate hunt and blow as many out of the water as they can.

I just get damn tired of hanging everything on Bush when the Democrats were in on it, too. A little reality from you libs would be sooooo refreshing.

I think OT brought Bush into it first...

Anyway, HOORAY!! That is one brave man!!
He saved the day. Still nothing from Obama...

I hope he doesn't apologize for 3 pirates killed by Americans.

What a day to celebrate. What a brave man.
They say it happened about 8:30 our time but I don't know if
that is EDT, but I suppose so.

God is good.

I think I see now why Old Timer likes Obama and hates Bush...
Bush stood up to the evils of the world, he was not bullied around, and he meant what he said. he was a good leader, and an admirable man....pretty much the opposite of our current President and the former Sherriff Old Timer....

OT, you are so blind by hate that you can not see the truth of what is happening to this nation.

Looks like the Captain took his fate into his own hands, (for the third time), and escaped (2nd time)

Great news that the military had the okay this time to back him up!

(CNN) -- The American captain of a cargo ship held hostage by pirates jumped overboard from the lifeboat where he was being held, and U.S. Navy SEALs shot and killed three of his four captors, according to a senior U.S. official with knowledge of the situation.

The title of this thread is misleading as the Captain was not released and jumped over board again giving the Navy a second chance to execute a plan.
I am happy the captain is a free man. Maybe this will give the major nations with a navys to get on side and deal with this problem.

MOMBASA, Kenya - An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a swift firefight that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, the ship's owner said.

A senior U.S. intelligence official said a pirate who had been involved in negotiations to free Capt. Richard Phillips but who was not on the lifeboat was in custody.

I guess the ones that were thinking "guns a blazing" was the way to go, were right on this one. Obama's/FBI negotiations didn't seem to work. They responded to the situation, much like the French did a couple of days ago to their own situation.

I guess we're back to the days of Bush, when you don't negotiate with Terrorists, you kill them (not try to arrest them).

The only guy arrested by the MSNBC report was the negotiator, that should promote further negotiations in the future.

You must be badly mistaken about the "Blindly" rushing in for hostages.........
ATTEMPT TO RESCUE IRAN HOSTAGES
The episode reached a climax when after failed attempts to negotiate a release, the United States military attempted a rescue operation, Operation Eagle Claw, on April 24, 1980, which resulted in an aborted mission, the crash of two aircraft and the deaths of eight American service members and one Iranian civilian. It ended with the signing of the Algiers Accords in Algeria on January 19, 1981. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the following day, just minutes after the new American president Ronald Reagan was sworn in.

Tactics and Negotiations go hand in hand... You negotiate and keep things under control until you can get the logistics, manpower, and most intelligence you can in place- and also wear down the reflex's of the perpetrators...Then you are better set up to take positive advantage of an opportune moment when it happens...

We may not know- and I hope we never know exactly what all transpired leading to this....Like I said earlier- I bet they could hear a mouse fart in that boat- and may even have had a communication set up with the Captain- either thru key words over the radio they'd provided the pirates for negotiations or thru signals...Possibly even had a minicam in the radio seeing what all is going on...
But these are the type things that aren't and shouldn't be made public...Everyone thats worked L.E. or in many military positions know you have key words- and key signs- known only to you and your partners that you use in such situations...

Well...I'm sorry as hell that I misled you.

This was the news I got....and I was not there and I am not all knowing and all seeing as some on here are.

Personally, instead of this shite slinging going on here...I'm glad the man is ALIVE..no matter how he got out.

And if we listened to YOU, it would have been handled as a law enforcement matter. Where all of the top brass of the FBI would still be jockeying for positions closest to the cameras at the press briefings.

Yep, you tell that little lady to get her cute little butt down to the galley and bake those boys a nice big cake for a job well done.

This is really GREAT news. Credit goes not only to the Navy guys, but also, all the way up to their Commander-in-Chief for a job well done. These are the kinds of things that make us proud to be Americans - no matter what political affiliation.

I agree with Kola, I'm glad that this Captain was brave enough to put himself up as a hostage, instead of the entire crew.

I'm glad that he was courageous enough to escape twice, and give the SEALS the opportunity to take out these pirates.

He is a true leader and hero, he deserves the opportunity to stand in front of Obama for a photo op.

He seems like just the type of person that will let Obama know that "you cannot negotiate with Terrorists", you have to act!

Kola, you were right on. They had Navy Seal snipers on the Bainbridge!!
Sounds like it was getting close to darkness and they decided
to go for it.

Great day in America!!

And to give him his due, it sounds like Obama gave the order to do
what needed done. Not directly of course, but he said it and it went through the proper channels.

Ya just can't take anything away from the brave Captain Phillips
though--he was in the midst of a terrible operation and exhibited
great bravery--which could have led to the ultimate sacrifice.

Oh, I think one of the newsmen slipped up today and called the pirates "terrorists." :p

Well...she told me more than I could say at the time. She's home due to a nasty broken leg from a hit by a drunk driver.

Anyhoo....my sentence about when they took a pizz...shoot'em....that's kinda part in parcel to what she said to me.

So I just turned it around into my sentence.

She was one of the ' important' people @ Offat (sp?) AFB in NE on 9-11 when Bush went there as she trained in surveillance, radar, etc. Ohhh....now she's got some good stories about that.

I told her I could never understand why the NAVY had a base in NE.....NE hadn't seen sea water in over 65 million yrs.
