Might be a little tense around the Pelini Thanksgiving Day table this year.

Carl Pelini, whose Florida Atlantic football team fell to 2-6 with a 45-10 loss at Auburn on Saturday, resigned abruptly on Wednesday, effectively immediately, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported.

Pelini, whose brother Bo is the head coach at Nebraska, is 5-15 in two years at the Conference USA school. The Owls' two wins this season were over UAB and South Florida, and they were 1-4 in conference play.

Pelini is the second head coach in school history, following Howard Schnellenberger, who coached the team from 2001-11. Dieter Kurtenbach, who covers FAU for the Sun Sentinel, tweeted that the resignation was "totally out of left field" and that receivers coach Jeff Sims would serve as acting head coach.

McMurphy reported that FAU will hold a press conference at 4 p.m. to address the situation.
