Cash for Clunckers

Is everyone excited about subsidizing the purchase of little tin cans? Any predictions on how many get repo'd? Is this a shot in the arm for the insurance companies as well, since a financed car requires comp and collision coverage? I'm just wondering locally how many "push, pull, or drags" will be used to get hold of that $4500 down payment.

You notice how it's being promoted as a green deal, but you have to buy a NEW car?

The waste of this program is truly disgusting. None of these 'clunkers' can be resold, the cars can't be parted out, the dealerships who trade for these things have to drain the engine oil and put in sodium silicate and run the engine until it locks up destroying the engine, the tires have to be shredded regardless of usability. The only use is for the recyclable bits after everything has been shredded.

Isn't that what we want- the revival of the Auto industry- and people going back to work- and these rich bankers circulating some money again back thru the dealerships and the communities?
Along with putting more fuel efficient vehicles on the road...

This program is a great idea but only if they also had raised the CAFE standards to say 50 or 60 mpg instead of what, 35? The energy policy is not off to a good start. Chu is not up to the job.

The people that are promoting going green and recycling are not allowing any recycling of usable parts and that is a great idea? Why can't a person get a used car under the plan?

Say Oldtimer, isn't it about time to put your money where your mouth is and run a little sodium silicate through that Olds 98, to help Obama jump start the economy and save the ice caps! 8)

I have my doubts if even half of the cars sold in this program will be domestic. We'll probably end up moving alot of pos Kia's or something of that ilk, all on the back of the US taxpayers! :x

How about keeping the low mileage good shape clunkers and let some of the less fortunate in the US swap their older wore out car for them. These people cannot afford the new car. This would accomplish the same thing by taking an old car off of the road. Looks to me as if this is nothing more than a deal to give some folks money for an old car on trade and to stimulate the car sales. I looked in to this. I have a 97 Z71 2900000 miles. Yes I could get $4500 for it but I would have to trade in for a truck that cost over $320000. I will keep the old clunker until it lays down. Could be three or more years or maybe tommorow.

OT you must be a total failure. You have a total disgust for anyone that has made good money in his lifetime....doctors, bankers, insurance folks... anybody...And all you can do is hang out at the local watering hole and drown your sorrows. You need to be in Obama's cabinet cause you sure have a hangup about anybody but yourself making money.

I traded last year. Brand new Suburban. No govt aid, no loan. Don't need credit...I ain't driving no tin can car no matter what the MPG is. They don't look good at all plastered on the front of an 18 wheeler with body parts hanging out.

The Volvo is one of the safest cars in the world.....Don't know if they still do- but they did in the late 90's offer a 1 million dollar payment to your relatives if you were killed in a Volvo in any kind of vehicular accident...

What's the energy saved to energy used to recycle, ratio?

Would $4500 buy the difference and then some, even under Cap and Trade, which is supposed to be cents/day?

Safest CAR, not safest vehicle! Big Difference, Surely you are smart enough to pick a Suburban over a Volvo car if you knew you were going to be in a accident?

This program was a bad program no matter what!

1st.... off it will push the prices up on used cars since the market will see a a shortage!

2cd.....It helps new car lots at the expense of used car lots. Government shouldn't pick favorites

3rd.....It will hurt Parts stores

4th.....It will hurt small business owned repair shops

5th.....It will push down the price of scrap metal

6th.....It will hurt trucking companies that haul scrap metal.

7th.....It is not the Governments right to use my tax dollars to help someone else buy a car or pick a company to prop up. They should be doing what their original purpose was and leave businesses alone!
