Cat question for Cal

How are your calves doing since your breakout? Man what a bummer. I shouldn't say anything but my 2 bunches that I weaned went great. I was complaining to a game warden once about our elk problems and he said you don't know what problems are until you have a mountain lion problem. Hope you get your calves back to normal. Maybe you could borrow Kosmo Kid's new bloodhound and do some trackin'.

We have all three and so far have not had a huge problem with the cats. They are definitely stealth though and are a capable adversary.

Hey, glad you had great luck with weaning! As far as anything to do with GFP..... :???: .......we had Antelope destroying a couple wheat fields one winter. They were going to take care of it......   . Pathetic attempt, one little saggy wire along one side of the fields with a 6v charger.....all worthless. Besides, they're probably too busy transporting captured Cougars and Wild Turkey to this area to do anything helpful. :???:

These calves had all been weaned (six different bunches), some since late August, and turned in together. They were real calm before this, and are settling down pretty good now. I think leaving a tractor idle all night with them is stopping another episode, but they were milling around about 1:00AM last night. Still, running a tractor every night isn't really a very good long term solution, and we put off getting them sorted, just didn't want to stress them any more at all. Today was the first day we didn't treat any for sickness.....just one lame one. We've used alot of Nuflor and generic Banamine since that happened.

Anyway, just grateful to those friends/neighbors that helped us out when all hell broke loose, day and night, and helping fence, and for flying that blue airplane around locating critters.

I don't know howcome no calves got hit up on the hiway during that fog. Did you hear about those 9 (?) calves that got ran and hit up on I90 around New Underwood a few days ago? That rancher suspects a Mountain Lion. AP called them young cows.....

It's been a long day. Not more than 10 minutes after I posted my question this morning I went out to find my second bunch of weaned calves had broken out. I knew I shouldn't have said anything. They had been weaned 2 weeks and the busted out last night. It shouldn't have been that big a deal to get them in, a few old cows and all the bulls right there to stop them, but NOOOO!!! I've never seen calves this stirred up. It was like trying to bring a herd of antelope into a corral. It took all day and I still don't have them all found. There's still 7 or 8 running around in the corn field. I consider my cattle pretty gentle but these calves were on the run like their hair was on fire. We've been weaning calves for a lot of years and I have never seen anything like this. I hope there was not a cat involved but after today, I'm starting to wonder.

We’ve had cats go through periodically.. Had a buckskin horse in the corral and was dog gentle. Cat comes through and after that he is very hard to catch… The dog who is older than dirt will whine at the door… You let him out and he won’t get off the step… We’ve had calves with broken backs and broken legs. Railroad ties ripped out of the ground… It will be weeks before the calves will not stampede for no reason…. The whole atmosphere will change when these cats pass through….

You might try leaving a radio playing as that helps settle freshly weaned calves. Country western works better than hip hop or rap.

Darn, Big Swede, sorry to hear about your calves. That comparison to thier hair being on fire is a pretty good description. I hope you don't get a bunch of sick ones after this, or find ones with injuries.

Has Kosmo offered his tracking services yet.

Keep us updated, the idling tractor (we left the hazards on) has been enough to keep them in at night, maybe you had a better idea.

Katrina, you're just full of good news. :)

I suggest a recording of a shell being jacked into a barrel! Followed by the sound of 180 grains of lead being pushed down the barrel by a primer and powder! Followed by the sound of a cat going Oh man that hurt!

per, leanin'H, have you got those recordings for sale yet? Been just leaving the flashers going all night now....seems to be working......maybe they'd be alright with nothing going either, by now :???:

I wonder how Big Swede is doing?

What kind of tractor would you like? Idling or spooled up? I'll give it to you if it works. I also have some battery powered LED flashers. Spotted my wolf pack a couple of days ago. One stopped long enough for a shot had my rifle been in that truck. Wonder if the recording and flashers would work with them. :? :???: Might give that a try. Hope all works out for you and Big Swede.

Ever since we got the calves back in the pen they have acted like nothing ever happened. Could be the fact that they would have to run through a lot of mud to break out again. Maybe not worth the effort. Anybody else getting a little muddy? This weather has got to break before winter really sets in doesn't it? I have 500 acres of corn to harvest and haven't turned a wheel yet. Still running at 25% moisture plus. A lot of neighbors want to wean calves but nobody has any corn to sell so most are holding off weaning. The guys with sunflowers and soybeans are the ones that really need a break. I've never seen anything like this. Kind of like having the same bad dream we all had last fall in this area. I'm sure everything will work out in the end, it always seems to some how.
